More than 40 operators of Parks and Gardens work to remove fallen branches and secure the ficus of Santo Domingo (16/06/2017)

As arborist technicians have explained, Ficus macrophylla undergo thermal and thermal stresses, whereby branch fractures occur.

Tree retention systems have slowed down branches and minimized impact consequences

More than 40 operators of Parks and Gardens work this afternoon to remove the branches and secure the ficus of Santo Domingo.

These labors will continue tomorrow.

According to arborist technicians, Ficus macrophylla suffer from water and thermal stress, when there are fractures of branches that are in good health and usually occur when there are high temperatures with scarce rainfall.

Thus, according to the technicians, the phenomenon has been known as SBD (Summer Brach Drop), a type of failure of branches on which there are no conclusive studies to date.

The branches fall in summer and these are in apparent good condition, there are no obvious defects or other causes to identify a situation of previous risk.

Such fractures usually occur when certain wood tissues dehydrate and collapse when concurring high ambient temperatures with scarce rainfall, as is happening in Murcia this week

There are changes of humidity at the internal level in the tree, quite significant at the level of cellular structure or fibers, so that the fallen branches appear dry.

The ruptures occur in mature specimens, with branches that are arranged horizontally with respect to their insertion point in the trunk.

In the ficus of Santo Domingo revisions are made several times a year supervised by a professional specialized in these unique specimens.

Arborist technicians of a specialized company carry out a thorough inspection of each of these specimens to see their general condition, evolution, their trunk, if they have a branch in bad condition and, in the case that it is necessary to perform some action, what measures are Have to adopt.

In this way, six detailed reviews of the ficus of Santo Domingo by certified arborists (January 15, March 1, May 2, June 8, and September 7 and November 25) were conducted in the past year.

In the current year a review was carried out on January 23, March 1 and the last on May 15, performed by arborist technicians of a specialized company.

Now, after the event this morning, the technicians will perform a thorough inspection to determine the appropriate treatment.

It must be remembered that the tree has two safety systems, which have been those that have slowed the fall of the branches and minimized their impact: a pergola of protection and a system of retention, called boa, that consists of ropes of material Synthetic and steel that resist several tons of weight and anchor the branches to each other to avoid falling to the ground.

This specimen was planted in 1893 and its height exceeds 30 meters.
