UMU students organize an exhibition on the control of the individual (14/06/2017)

The room of the Puertas de Castilla Center will host from Friday June 16 the exhibition "Docile bodies, captive conduct."

It is an expositive proposal of the students of the Master in Production and Artistic Management of the University of Murcia.

The exhibition includes artists Héctor Cayuela, Roslim Dew, Paco Fernández, Pablo Follana, Ana María Larinov, Miguel Angel Lozano, Arturo Méndez, Adrián Rodríguez and Pablo Sandoval.

The exhibition is curated by Paula Javaloyes and Daniel Soriano, and coordinated by Martín González and Victoria Rodríguez, and will be inaugurated at 8 pm.

It is the first exhibition in a public space of the students of this master, and its objective is to introduce them in the management and production of exhibitions in a collaborative way.

Commissaries, artists, coordinators and designers are students.

The French philosopher Michel Foucault's book, "Watch and Punish" (1975), from which each artist has selected a fragment to articulate his work, is the guiding principle.

The text reflects Foucault's reflections on the systems of control and indoctrination that power effects on individuals, starting from the architectural concept of the panopticon developed by the British philosopher Jeremy Bentham in the late eighteenth century.

This structure is a circular plant monitoring system, with a central tower from which to observe without being seen.

According to Foucault, the dominant classes have exercised control of the population through religion, education, politics or medicine that have been instrumentalised to create a submissive people.

The exhibition consists of pieces ranging from painting and drawing, to the artistic installation, and will be open to the public until September 15.
