A UMU doctoral thesis warns of the negative effects of excessive use of whatsapp (13/06/2017)

A doctoral thesis conducted at the University of Murcia (UMU) by Cristina Bernal Ruiz and in which 630 students were surveyed, has warned about the negative consequences of excessive use of the Internet and, especially, whatsapp.

This research, which has obtained the qualification of outstanding cum laude, points out that the Internet has broken into society, becoming an essential element in various areas of our lives, and despite the fact that access has multiple benefits, its excessive use can Become problematic and have negative consequences similar to those experienced in behavioral addictions.

Among the instant messaging applications, the conclusions of the doctoral thesis add, Whatsapp is currently the most valued tool used by young people in Spain.

For the author of the doctoral thesis, it increasingly attracts the attention of users, who use this application anywhere and at any time, without taking into account the possible impact that their behavior may have.

This research has also shown that "the greater the problematic use of the Internet, the greater the negative impact of Whatsapp experienced by university students, and vice versa."

"The problematic use of the Internet was directly related to neuroticism, impulsivity and negative mood, and conversely, with age, extroversion, affability, openness to experience, responsibility and psychological well-being ".

The doctoral thesis was directed by UMU professor Ana Isabel Rosa Alcázar.
