The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, accompanied by the Councilor for Sports and Health, Felipe Coello, signed today the agreement with the president of the Murcian Society of Anthropology, Pedro Martínez Cavero, for the development of studies on the cultural history of the Cementerio de Our Father Jesus, coinciding with the 130th anniversary of the first burial that took place in the municipal Camposanto on June 6, 1887.

"The Cemetery Our Father Jesus, beyond being the municipal reference point for burials, has acquired the character of socio-cultural testimony that reflects the history of the city of Murcia and, in collaboration with the Murcian Society of Anthropology we will continue the Research and historical research, with new actions such as guided tours and thematic publications, "said the mayor.

In 2015 the City Council began its collaboration with the Murcia Society of Anthropology, the University of Murcia and the Center for European Studies of the UMU, carrying out the publication of the first guides on 'The Cemetery Our Father Jesus', with two different themes : The Camposanto as a cultural asset and the writers and artists who live in it.

With the agreement signed today, this collaboration is formalized and new actions are established: the organization of a day on the Cemetery of Our Father Jesus, the elaboration of a thematic issue of the Revista Murciana de Antropología, as well as the publication of visiting guides on the next topics:

· 'Murcian writers and artists.

A walk through the Cemetery Our Father Jesus' (enlargement of the existing one),

· 'Murcia entrepreneurs and industrialists'

· 'Architectural flows and funerary art'

· 'Traces of social stratification',

· 'Traces of the Civil War'.

It also establishes the development of a web page that, using a QR code, links the guides with multimedia information and the provision of training courses on the cultural history of Our Father Jesus Cemetery for guides that will be made available to the Tourism Office, Guided tours can start after the summer.

This Cemetery, one of the 34 that exist in the municipality, is the largest and the only one of municipal ownership.

Our Father Jesus, located in the hamlet of El Puntal (although popularly known as the 'Cemetery of Espinardo'), currently welcomes 166,000 people buried.

"This is a true collective monument to generations of Murcia, which brings together so many people who have worked to build the Murcia we know today, among which are great names of culture and the arts," explained the mayor.
