José Antonio García López, GEQO Award to Young Investigators (25/05/2017)

The Group of Organometallic Chemistry of the University of Murcia, led by Juan Gil and Maria Teresa Chicote, is in luck.

One of its members, José Antonio García López, has received the GEQO award for its high research productivity and above all for its ability to conduct an independent research and publish in impact journals as the sole director of the same

The GEQO award is awarded by the Specialized Group of Organometallic Chemistry of the Royal Spanish Society of Chemistry.

This national society grants each year three prizes, among them the one of Young Investigators for minors of forty years.

It is its fourth edition, this recognition has fallen on the Murcia Garcia Lopez, 36 years.

The objective of this scientist, and of the research group in which he works, is to develop new methods of synthesis of chemical compounds of interest, but with the particularity of using metals in small quantities during these processes, especially palladium, which Becomes the main element of his research.

They study the chemical compounds called organometallic complexes, which contain an organic part (carbon compounds) attached to a metal.

These complexes are self-interested, but can also be used as catalysts in organic synthesis, since they mediate numerous chemical transformations that would not otherwise occur.

The catalysts are responsible for "assembling the pieces of the molecular puzzle".

Knowing its operation can serve to produce interesting compounds in a more direct and efficient way in the future, for example new drugs or materials. The work of this scientist focuses on how to prepare these molecules, how they are structures and how they function as intermediates, As explained by the doctor himself.

"Let's say that if we did not know how to synthesize and improve it, we could not have many products that are useful to us," he says.

When he was called to announce that he was one of the winners, he could not be more surprised.

He acknowledges that he was not expected because it is a 'very competitive' recognition.

Garcia López was formed from the outset with the Group of Organometallic Chemistry, where he did his thesis, but it was in his postdoctoral stay in Manchester that he learned more about new types of catalysis.

Knowledge that is transferring to the Department of Inorganic Chemistry of the Faculty of Chemistry through a new line of research.

As the ultimate responsible for this new line of research becomes the main author of all published articles.

This freedom has been one of the reasons that have surpassed in this prize.

Together with him, Professor Miguel Ángel Esteruelas Rodrigo of the University of Zaragoza, with Rafael Usón, MD, has been awarded the prize for his scientific research on the chemistry of osmium and Professor María Concepción Gimeno Floría, also from the University of Zaragoza. Rise with the Prize of Investigation Excellency, for its brilliant contributions in relation to organometallic chemistry.

The committee has been composed of awardees GEQO from previous years such as professors Juan Forniés, Carmen Claver, Salvador Conejero, Victorio Cadierno and the president of GEQO, Eduardo Peris.

The awards ceremony will be held next September 22 at the University of Alcalá (Madrid), which of course Garcia Lopez will come with enthusiasm representing the University of Murcia.
