The participation expands the remodeling of Alfonso X until La Circular and Murcia will gain 14,000 m2 of pedestrian space (24/05/2017)

The project provides for a pedestrian unit treatment of the whole walk and includes the habilitation of a two-way bike path that will run along the west side, next to the Archaeological Museum, and new green areas, tripling the number of existing trees.

Participation has been the axis that has articulated the process of project design, integrating the proposals of the different neighborhood and associative groups, and consensuating them.

This new boulevard in the heart of the city will tell the story of medieval Murcia, in an educational journey that will remember the figure of Alfonso X, Jaime I and King Lobo.

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, and the Councilor of Fomento, Roque Ortiz, presented today the project of pedestrianization of Avenida Alfonso X El Sabio, a result of consensus and participation that will enable a large boulevard in the heart of the Incorporating more than 14,000 m2 of new pedestrian area.

Participation has been the axis that has articulated the project design process, integrating the proposals and allegations of the different neighborhood and associative groups, and consensuando them with the technical observations of the Official Association of Architects of the Region and the General Directorate of Cultural Property .

The result is a project that extends the pedestrianization proposed in the initial proposal, providing linearity to the whole walk from Santo Domingo to the Circular Square.

The action will be carried out in two phases: Phase I, from Santo Domingo to Jaime I (with an area of 7,600 m2), and Phase II (6,800 m2), from there to La Circular.

Phase I will be tendered in the coming weeks and its works will have an execution period of 8 months.

A landmark in the historic center

The intervention will involve the creation of a pedestrian itinerary in the historic center of the city and that will connect La Glorieta with La Circular, crossing Plaza Belluga, Trapería, Santo Domingo and Alfonso X;

A large reference pedestrian axis of around 50,000 m2 (an area equivalent to 5 football fields).

Limited traffic: less noise and pollution

The project gives priority to pedestrians, so it includes a total pedestrianization of the space that restricts the traffic of vehicles to residents, public transport (taxis), school zone and loading and unloading in regulated hours, circulating in a single direction towards Santo Domingo By the west causeway, the one next to the church of the Claras.

This will reduce environmental and noise pollution, providing greater neighborhood tranquility, while enabling new public spaces and stalls, reducing noise and pollution.

The current terraced area will be reconfigured without increasing it.

A new system of intelligent collection of waste and adaptive LED light of low consumption will be implemented.

The new configuration of the traffic has been solved after an exhaustive study with data collection in situ, through the placement of turns and real measurements in Alfonso X, Jaime I, Santa Clara and Enrique Villar and the accessibility of vehicles and residents Will do with identification technology (without barriers).

A bi-directional bike lane and larger wooded area

The project includes the habilitation of a two-way bike path that will run along the current west causeway.

Likewise, the current public bicycle rental system will be maintained in the immediate vicinity of the new Avenue.

The existing trees will be respected along the whole walk, more specimens will be planted (orange trees that will cross all the west side and also palm trees), planting shrub vegetation in gardens like "orchards" in the east side, reaching triplicate The current vegetation and creating new spaces of natural shade.

An avenue that will tell the story of medieval Murcia

The pedestrianization project will be a reflection of the history of the city and will include elements and spaces dedicated to medieval Murcia, a configuration that will allow us to approach the life of the protagonists of the time, such as the monarch that gives name to the emblematic Avenue, Jaime I or the Wolf King.

It will be a pedagogical and historical route that will narrate the trajectory of the King Lobo (Ibn Mardanis) until the conquest of the city by Jaime I and his cession to the King of Castile, Alfonso X, a period of splendor for Murcia.

A place for the Wolf King

Thus, the great pedestrian area will include plaques and references with the history of these characters and reference to their works, such as the Cantigas de Santa María.

Likewise, a plaza with palm trees will be created dedicated to the King Lobo, at the height of the Official College of Surveyors and Technical Architects.

The pavement materials of the whole avenue will be based on stone in different formats and textures, a material of great resistance and formal qualities.

"We want this to be a performance with roots and wings.

We have just celebrated the 750th anniversary of the constitution of the Council of Murcia by King Wise and the new configuration will pay homage to the history of our municipality.

At the same time, the avant-garde and innovation will be present along the whole promenade, with quality elements that will configure this new space as a cosmopolitan and reference point in Murcia, of tourist and cultural interest, in which Itinerary highlights the monastic group BIC de Las Claras, "said José Ballesta.

Phases and times

Today, the basic integral project has been presented, which includes both phases.

The project for the implementation of Phase I has already been completed, so the works will be tendered in the coming weeks and will be executed in three sequential stages: west causeway (Santa Clara), east causeway (Santa Ana) and central promenade, This way there are always two areas available for pedestrian and road traffic.

"The work phase has been technically taken care of to the extreme, with the greatest interest given that the neighbors, shops and all surrounding activities have the lowest possible impact," said the mayor.

The City Council is already working on the drafting of the Phase II project which, once completed, will complete the integral action.

Participation, key pillar

Participation and transparency have been the key pillars in the elaboration of this process, which has incorporated the proposals made by communities of neighbors, political groups, the Association Ecologistas en Acción, the College of Architects and other individuals, seeking their conciliation to enrich The performance, as well as the report of the General Directorate of Cultural Property and the contributions of the College of Architects.

The participatory process began with the public presentation of the basic project and collected dozens of proposals via the municipal registry and through the web www.fomento.es

Subsequently, it was evaluated by the neighbors themselves, with information posts on the same avenue and submitted to the relevant public information process.

It also spread through the media and social networks.
