Murcia receives an injection of 17.5 million euros to develop strategic projects (22/05/2017)

The Murcia Strategy has been recognized as one of the best in Spain, following the publication today in the BOE of the resolution of the second call for sustainable and integrated urban development strategies financed by the ERDF.

The Mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, held an emergency meeting this afternoon with the entire Government team to begin work on the resolution of the FEDER Funds Grant Program for the financing of Integrated Sustainable Urban Development Strategies. Communicated this morning by the Ministry of Finance and Public Function, and for which Murcia will receive an economic injection of more than 17.5 million euros, to develop strategic projects, in a call to which they have competed competitively 185 Municipalities, councils and associations of all Spain.

"The Murcia Strategy has been recognized as one of the best in Spain, by external advisors in a competitive assessment, placing us at the head of the country in obtaining ERDF funding," said the mayor, who explained that "these Funds must be added that were approved last summer for the development of the project of smart city 'MiMurcia: Your City, Intelligent, Close, Open and Innovative', endowed with 8 million euros.

Thus, the capital of the Region becomes the first municipality of the Peninsula to obtain the largest ERDF funding (POCS and POCint) in the current legislature and in the second of Spain, just behind the Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Specifically, the municipality will receive a total investment of 17.5 million euros for the development of the project 'IT Murcia: Innovation and Tradition', of which 14 million (80% of the total investment) corresponds to the Feder Funds And the remaining 20% ​​will be municipal co-financing.

"This is an important investment for Murcia and for Murcia with which we will materialize the projects and actions of transformation of our municipality in which we are working for two years," said the mayor, who wanted to thank "the Social Council Of the City, and to the more than 50 associations, social groups and entities of the municipality that compose it, for their participation in the elaboration of this Strategy. "

José Ballesta will meet tomorrow with the working group of the University of Murcia, who has also collaborated in the preparation of the Strategy and on Wednesday will detail the project in the Board of Spokesmen.

Six lines of action

José Ballesta said that "these funds will be applied in six lines of action of urban development fundamental to the municipality."

These include sustainable mobility initiatives, which may include bicycle lanes, reinforcement and improvement in urban transport and public and private transport interchanges.

Also valorization of patrimonial elements urban like Old Cárcel and the Huerta like natural, agricultural, tourist and cultural environment.

The river Segura as the backbone of the municipality and local development, a line of action in which actions of 'Murcia Río' linked to the development of family leisure or landscape can be included.

Another of the lines corresponds to the physical, economic and social regeneration of neighborhoods, with performances in infrastructures in La Paz or El Carmen.

Also included is a line for training and employability and another that complements Smart Cities initiatives or smart cities.
