The University of Murcia participates in a project to produce vegetables in closed containers (19/05/2017)

The general objective of the Hidroleaf project is to develop and validate an integrated system for the sustainable production of leafy horticultural plants in greenhouse and in indoor cultivation using artificial light, applying the new ICT technologies to optimize the growing conditions of the plants.

In concrete fruit of this project will be developed factories of vegetable crops in intelligent containers.

The idea is to convert containers of goods to be used as culture media.

Within these containers will be established the optimal conditions for the agricultural production can be carried out, controlling the parameters of humidity, temperature, luminosity, etc using sensor and automation systems, which allows to frame this project within the scope of Industry 4.0.

This hermetic conditioning inside a container offers the advantage that the external climatic conditions (temperature, humidity, ...) will not influence the cultivation and development of the plants, thanks to the specific conditions generated and controlled in the interior.

In this way you can grow vegetables anywhere on the planet regardless of the weather conditions of each place, whether 50 ° or below freezing temperatures.

Other inputs of the project will be that it will not be necessary to transport the product collected over long distances as it has hitherto, since any location will be valid for the installation of the containers, with consequent savings associated with transport and its corresponding CO2 emission.

The production can be constant in any season of the year and will not need the use of pesticides, because in hydroponics they do not grow weeds and therefore it is not necessary to use these substances to eliminate said herbs, reason why the products that are cultivated will be Much healthier.

The objective is to achieve a totally sustainable production and the total use of the resources, obtaining to take advantage of the 100% of the fertilizer and the water since this one is recirculated constantly, even taking advantage of the condensation of the environmental humidity.

Even the water transpired by plants will be condensed by cooling systems for reuse.

Hidroleaf is a collaborative project between entities and companies of the Region of Murcia.

It is led by the Murcia agricultural companies Rufepa and RITEC that have great experience in solutions of protected crops in greenhouses.

Within the framework of this project the Department of Information Engineering and Communications of the UMU, is responsible for developing the comprehensive management platform with all the information received and user interfaces.

The spin-off of the University of Murcia, Odin Solutions SL, one of the most innovative technological companies in the region, is responsible for providing crop sensing and controllers for the automation of drainage, fertilization and irrigation.

OdinS has a multidisciplinary team with more than 10 years dedicated to the design, development and implementation of industrial process monitoring and automation solutions.

Also part of the consortium is the Department of Plant Nutrition Cebas-CSIC that will contribute their knowledge for the precise control of the parameters of oxygenation, humidity and PH of the crop.

The Hidroleaf project, which aims to promote technological development, innovation and quality research, has been funded by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness and by the FEDER fund.
