In total, 46 applications were submitted, including those of three non-profit associations, with social integration projects.

Last December, the regular call for the leisure orchards was published, where users of the 121 existing plots had the option of renewing for another two years.

The winners of 108 lands did so, while 13 left them free for the draw held today for the new orchards, for those who have preference for retired, pre-retired or unemployed people residing in the neighborhood or hamlet where the orchard is located.

Non-profit citizen entities with social insertion projects may also opt for a plot.

The orchards are intended for the cultivation of vegetables in a self-consumption, non-profit, combining social, educational, environmental and patrimonial benefits, since they promote the conservation of local varieties in danger of extinction, the maintenance of an agroecosystem of Interest such as the old orchard of Murcia and the educational, training and dissemination.

One of the main advantages of this program, explains the Councilor for Urban Planning, Environment and Huerta, Antonio Navarro, lies precisely in the possibility of 'combining the social benefits of this type of orchards with the environmental and heritage that represents the conservation of varieties Local in danger of extinction and the maintenance of the orchard ".

The leisure orchards network is reserved for the cultivation of vegetables in a self-consumption regime, with traditional and ecological production systems, exempt from the manipulation of dangerous plant protection products and as a guarantee of respect for health and the environment.

The cultivation option is free, but the use of traditional varieties of the orchard of Murcia is prioritized.
