UCAM and CEBAS-CSIC initiate research to compare the influence of sugar-sweetened beverages with those rich in bioactive compounds in the development of cardiovascular disease and type II diabetes The UCAM promotes a new generation of healthy drinks (23/02/2017)

The Faculty of Health Sciences of UCAM, through the Research Group "Nutrition, Oxidative Stress and Bioavailability", led by Dr. Débora Villaño Valencia and Pilar Zafrilla Rentero started a project together with the CEBAS-CSIC to study the effects Beneficial in preventing the abnormal increase of the amount of glucose in the blood with the consumption of sugar-free beverages added and rich in bioactive phytochemicals.

The BEBESANO project is presented as an alternative to beverages with added sugars such as juices and other isotonic drinks that are currently on the market.

It will be developed in a first phase in which the Scientific Research Council, CEBAS-CSIC, will produce a natural fruit drink (lemon and maqui), rich in bioactive compounds (polyphenols and vitamins) with various types of sweetening ingredients for To estimate their influence on the biological effects of overweight volunteers.

In the second phase, UCAM researchers will evaluate the effect of drinking this beverage on the metabolic response after ingestion, in the parameters: hormonal response, oxidative and inflammatory state in overweight adult population.

The results of this project, within the framework of the national R & D plan, will allow the evaluation of the effect of a new generation of healthy beverages in a key process in the development of cardiovascular diseases and Type II diabetes, with its consequent social and economic impact , Compared to those of habitual consumption.

"It is a project that opens important prospects for the food and health industry, as the liquids evaluated represent an alternative to the high consumption of sugary drinks. They are a new option of safe and healthy food to combat obesity and overweight , Which is a public health issue that worries scientists, the political class and society in general, "said Dr. Villaño and Zafrilla.
