Now Murcia demands the eradication in the public spaces of the invading plant 'cat's claw' (21/02/2017)

NOW MURCIA calls for an inventory and an eradication plan in the municipal public spaces of the plant 'pennisetum setacetum', an invasive species commonly known as 'cat's tail'.

The councilor Alicia Morales explains that there are copies in roundabouts, roads, ditches and gardens of the municipality: "Their presence has escaped control in various public spaces, which is producing that also extends through areas of traditional garden, threatening native species of the municipality".

With the aim of getting it eradicated, Murcia will now take a motion to the next plenary session, also proposing an information campaign in the municipality to raise awareness of the danger to the environment of this invasive species.

The 'pennisetum setacetum' or 'cat's tail' is considered by the Ministry of the Environment as an invasive exotic species, according to the Spanish Catalog and List of Invasive Exotic Species (Royal Decree 1628/2011), and by the lists of exotic plants and Invasive of the Region of Murcia, Catalonia or Balearic Islands, among other communities.

"It comes from the African part of the Eastern Mediterranean, from Tunisia to Somalia," explains the mayor.

"Spain came as an ornamental plant, and its use soon spread throughout the Region and the municipality, until its use was banned."

Morales affirms that "it is necessary to remove all the specimens that are colonizing areas adjacent to which this species had been planted, as well as in other places where it has spread, eliminating this plant from public spaces and urging the owners of Orchards and terraces containing this species to also eradicate it.

The councilor laments that "the administration has not been carried out with much interest awareness campaigns to the population, so it is imperative to carry out an information campaign that warns of the need to end this species, with active collaboration Of the citizenship when it detects a copy ".

Morales stresses "the imperative need to have clear criteria in the care, maintenance and replacement of parks and green areas of our municipality, with criteria for the eradication of invasive species, planting of native species, logging and replacement of specimens , Pruning and care, etc. ".

The mayor recalls that Now Murcia took to the Plenary, in September 2016, a motion that was unanimously approved for the creation of a Table of the Tree of the municipality, in which technicians and specialists set these criteria and let them know the neighbors Of the city and the districts.

"The government team says that the motion is still under study," Morales said, expressing his wish that it be materialized as soon as possible, as well as the motion on the 'cat's tail' that will be presented to the Plenary this Thursday.
