At the same time, a landscape intervention will be carried out, which will provide new green spaces along both sides of the river, as well as the environmental and monumental illumination of the route to allow its nocturnal use.

The project 'Murcia Río' city has taken off and begins to take shape with the start of the works for the implementation of the new bike lane and pedestrian path that will run next to the sheet of water of the Segura as it passes through the city , Enabling a green route that in total will add 26.5 kilometers, from La Contraparada to Beniel.

"We are going to open to all Murcia this new itinerary pedestrian and cyclist, which involves a transformation of the urban landscape of the city, returning and opening the neighborhood of Segura," said the mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, during his Visit to the works that are being carried out in the left bank of the river, in which also the president of the Hydrographic Confederation of the Segura, (CHS), Miguel Angel Ródenas, and members of the Municipal Corporation was present.

Simultaneously to the action, the City Council will carry out a landscape intervention that will provide new green spaces both margins of the river, as well as the environmental and monumental lighting of the route to allow its use at night.

"The work does not involve an excessive investment or the execution of large infrastructures, however, it marks a before and after in the way in which Murcia live and enjoy our river, transforming this emblematic environment of our municipality, to integrate it into Our day to day as a new green area for family leisure and sports, "noted the mayor.

The action, which is the result of the agreement signed by the City Council with the CHS for the project 'Murcia Rio', involves the construction of a new stretch of 2 kilometers in length from the Manterola catwalk to Víctor Villegas, connecting the bike lanes that already Run between El Malecón and La Contraparada, and the one that goes from the Auditorium to Beniel.

Two separate lanes: one for cyclists and one for pedestrians

The new healthy itinerary, located on the left bank, will have two separate lanes: one for pedestrians and one for cyclists, ensuring safety and comfort for its users.

Each of the two tracks will have an area of 2.5 meters wide.

The work, in which 194,800 euros will be invested, is being made with a pavement integrated in the natural space, achieving a waterproof track and resistant to the passage of maintenance vehicles and cyclists, and whose appearance is mimicked with the vegetal and earthy environment of the River.

The action also contemplates the restoration of the six existing pedestrian access stairs that connect the upper route with the lower walk of the channel, proceeding to repair the deteriorated steps and cleaning and sanitation of the surface.

A design compatible with river floods

The projected work has been designed taking into account the floods of the flow that can occur, as it affects the flood area of the river.

"Both the materials and the design of the work have been selected after considering this possibility, making the action compatible with possible avenues such as those occurred last December," said José Ballesta.

Revegetation and trees: new natural spaces of shade

The City Council is collaborating with the Chair of Ecology of the University of Murcia when it comes to selecting the species to be planted in both motes of the river (on the right bank there is a large walk with vegetation), as it passes through The heart of the city.

The University has already issued a report with proposals of native species of riverside, which must be included in the species list of the Segura Hydrographic Confederation.

"A group of native and riverine species of different sizes has been selected, which is the one that has finally been proposed to the Confederation," explained the mayor, who added that the objective "is to create a natural environment that is easily identifiable by the Murcia, that oxygenate the center and provide new green areas and shady spaces in the heart of the city.

For this reason, along with the new pedestrian and cycle route, the existing Tamarix specimens will be kept and it is intended to plant this and other typical shore species such as the White Poplar - following the recommendations of the UMU -, providing shade Both to the bike lane and to the parallel pedestrian path.

Bike lanes network

The construction of this new healthy itinerary is added to the seven-kilometer bike path that will cover the entire eastern belt of the city, from Ronda Sur to Juan Carlos I, through the avenues of Los Dolores, Miguel Induráin and Reino de Murcia, whose Paperwork is finalizing the City Council.

These are projects and actions that allow progress in the bicycle promotion strategy to achieve greater and better sustainable mobility, in which bicycles, pedestrians and motor vehicles coexist, promoting an alternative and non-polluting transportation system.
