Now Murcia calls for control of benzene emissions in the municipality and gas stations in urban areas (20/02/2017)

Alicia Morales stresses the importance of taking measures "to help achieve a sustainable, healthy and safe municipality"

NOW MURCIA demands that a diagnosis be made of benzene emissions in the municipality and that measures be taken to stop them, in addition to monitoring the activity of gas stations in urban areas, being one of the largest emitters of this pollutant, And the opening of new pumps in these areas is prevented.

Councilor Alicia Morales recalls that benzene is a dangerous atmospheric pollutant, causing leukemia, and notes that in the municipality "there is no adequate control of the emissions of this hydrocarbon, despite the studies that since the 1990s have placed Murcia as One of the European cities with greater presence of this element ".

For these reasons, Now Murcia will take a motion to the next Plenary "with the aim of advancing in the line of achieving a sustainable, healthy and safe municipality."

Morales points out that benzene is "included in the list of the main pollutants of the atmospheric environment" and points out that "the Environmental Quality Report of Ecologists in Action Region Murciana, whose last edition corresponds to 2016, describes as 'chronic' the deterioration of The quality of the air, he remembers that the only stations that measure the benzene are those of Alcantarilla and Alumbres, but not that of the neighborhood of San Basilio.

For its part, the research of the Department of Chemical Engineering of the University of Murcia points out that the emissions from gas station dispensers extend several meters around and add to the traffic pollution.

The study, published in 2010, recommends the non-installation of service stations within 100 meters of hospitals, health centers, educational centers and homes.

In this sense, the spokeswoman for Now Murcia states that "in the urban area of the city of Murcia there are numerous gas stations, close to housing, public spaces, cultural centers and even educational, and the same happens in urban centers of the districts."

Morales explains that "in Now Murcia we have received complaints from neighbors for the night time operation of certain gas stations near homes, breach of municipal licenses and even the installation of new stations in recent years."

The motion that Murcia will now take to the next Plenary proposes to ask the Ministry of Environment to establish a control of the level of benzene in the air of the municipality.

The text also provides for the control of benzene emissions in the vicinity of gas stations located in urban areas, and for local and regional administrations to strengthen monitoring and control of gas stations and compliance with schedules and licenses.
