UCAM and SEMERGEN present the University Chair in Family Medicine (03/02/2017)

The Spanish Society of Primary Care Physicians (SEMERGEN) and the San Antonio Catholic University of Murcia (UCAM) have officially presented the University Chair in Family Medicine UCAM-SEMERGEN.

This initiative intends to carry out actions in matters of teaching and research on specific issues related to primary health care, community care and public health.

José Luis Mendoza, president of the UCAM and the president of SEMERGEN, José Luis Llisterri, accompanied by Juan Antonio Divisón, director of the Chair and Jerónimo Lajara, was present at the presentation of the Chair. Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences of the UCAM.

In addition, they have also attended the event Estrella Núñez, Vice Chancellor of Research of the UCAM and the faculty of the Chair, formed by professors Manuela Guillén, Eduardo Carrasco, Armando Santo, Francisca Expósito and Isabel Ponce.

Importance of Family Medicine

"We want to convey to our students the importance of the practice of Family Medicine in the National Health System and, in turn, inculcate the values ​​and commitments of our specialty," said Juan Antonio Divisón, who emphasized that " The objective in teaching of the Chair is to promote and recognize the importance of Family Medicine within the Medical Degree, the postgraduate and the National Health System itself.

For the president of SEMERGEN, it is crucial to give prominence to the teaching of Primary Care in the university degrees of Medicine.

"The vast majority of students will opt for Primary Care places, a specialty that, due to lack of information and training, is not always given the importance it should have," said Dr. Llisterri, who emphasizes the SEMERGEN for the incorporation of Family Medicine into the university world, with the establishment of collaboration agreements with different universities throughout Spain.

José Luis Mendoza, president of the UCAM, has highlighted the importance of the implementation of this chair, through which we want to provide a service to many people. In our chairs research is encouraged and doctors are trained and we want Continue in that line with SEMERGEN ".

Jerónimo Lajara has emphasized the commitment made by the degree in Medicine for this specialty "we support the subject of family medicine for the great importance it has within the health services, specifically in the specialty of family doctor."

With this Chair, in addition, it is intended to promote the continued training of family doctors to try to maintain and expand professional skills and, on the other hand, to train physicians in this specialty to participate in teaching activities (graduate and postgraduate).

Patients are also a clear objective of this Chair.

With the launch of this university initiative lay the foundations for creating a school for patients and caregivers, facilitating their empowerment and fostering responsible and informed self-care.

Enhancing research

In addition, UCAM and SEMERGEN consider it fundamental to promote research through UCAM doctoral programs and specific projects in Primary Care.

"Our commitment is to encourage and encourage the conduct of doctoral theses among the students of the UCAM, managing to open new lines of research and contributing to contribute knowledge to the specialty of Family Medicine," said Juan Antonio Divisón.

And all these objectives within a context of incorporation of new technologies in the formation of the degree and postgraduate, training of patients and caregivers, and dissemination of the activities of the chair.

Growing presence in the University

Increasing the presence of Family Medicine in the University is one of the priority objectives of the Chair.

"We believe that Family Medicine must be obligatorily in the Medical Degree to publicize this discipline and assist in the training and research of medical professionals," said Dr. José Luis Llisterri;

In his opinion, "Family Medicine should be taught during the period of training of medical students," he said.
