The Civil Guard deactivates a mortar grenade found on a ravine in El Palmar-Murcia (23/01/2017)

The Civil Guard of the Region of Murcia deactivated a mortar grenade found by a hiker on the ramp 'El Cigarral' in the municipality of El Palmar-Murcia on Wednesday afternoon.

The device was started when the Civil Guard was alerted by a citizen of the discovery of a supposed explosive device, when practicing the trekking by a rambla of the municipal term of the Palmar-Murcia.

The protocol planned for these cases was quickly activated, with the deployment of the Explosives Deactivation Specialist Group (GEDEX), which, once in place, found that it was a mortar shell from the last Civil War launched And not exploded, so it kept its explosive charge intact.

After adopting the corresponding safety measures, the device was deactivated, in situ, by detonation with a controlled load.

Citizen collaboration

In these situations, the cooperation of citizens is key to the location of explosive devices whose manipulation could lead to an accident.

Depending on the cases, the Civil Guard acts in their custody, deactivation or destruction with the necessary security measures.

Safety recommendations

In the event of an abandoned object that may be suspected of being an explosive, incendiary or pyrotechnic device, the Civil Guard recommends to the public to follow the following indications:

Give the real consideration to any object, with the appearance of an explosive device, that is strange to the environment in which it is.

Do not touch or move the object.

Do not dispose of them in municipal waste containers

Call the emergency telephone number: 062, which the Civil Guard has available 24 hours a day, so that they can be neutralized and safely destroyed by specialists in the field.

If possible, stay in the vicinity of the place until the arrival of the Forces and Security Corps.

Otherwise signal the area or provide the coordinates through some GPS location program or application, very common today in some mobile phones.

In other words, DO NOT TOUCH, DO NOT MOVE, SIGNAL and WARN out at 062

Any kind of manipulation could have fatal consequences.
