Let's change Murcia will ask that asbestos pipes be removed from the municipality's drinking water network (21/01/2017)

Nacho Tornel, councilor of Cambiemos Murcia, will present a motion next Thursday for Emuasa to carry out an audit on the quantity and situation of potable water pipes that may contain asbestos in the municipality's networks, in order to elaborate a Plan of Elimination.

According to the mayor explained, due to its proven harmful effects on health, "there is a need to establish a short-term or medium-term plan to eradicate asbestos from its own potable water pipes where it is still present asbestos cement".

According to 2008 figures from the Spanish Association of Water Supply and Sanitation (AEAS), 26.4% of the state water supply networks (approximately 40,000 km) are made up of fiber cement and are the owners or managers of the networks The public administrations in 60% of the total.

"It is a problem that not only reaches users and consumers, but also the workers themselves who have to manipulate and repair these types of facilities, so it is necessary to address it soon and with the rigor it deserves" , has added.
