Murcia and the Greek city of Piraeus, united in the fight against climate change (17/01/2017)

Antonio Navarro Corchón, Councilor for Town Planning, Environment and Huerta of the City of Murcia this morning inaugurated the technical meeting in which representatives from the Greek city of Piraeus and a representative of the Office of Mayors Adapt.

Murcia was one of the eleven cities selected, among more than 60 European cities applicants, to participate in the twinning program between cities in the fight against climate change.

This program, promoted through the European Mayors Adapt initiative to which the city of Murcia joined in 2014, aims to take measures to adapt the cities and raise awareness among its citizens so that they can and mitigate the effects that the Climate change is bringing with it.

The Greek city of Piraeus, was the city chosen to twin with Murcia as both share similar vulnerabilities: increased temperatures and extreme water shortage.

Murcia hosts the two-day technical meeting between the two cities, in which the two cities exchange experiences on the process of adaptation to climate change, the challenges encountered and ways to overcome them.

Due to its more advanced travel in the field of climate change, Murcia will play the role of mentor city on this occasion.

Leadership and commitment

Murcia became one of the first cities in Spain to commit to 20-20-20, which consists of reducing its energy consumption by 20%, increasing the use of renewable energy by 20% and reducing emissions of effect gases Greenhouse also in the same proportion, 20% by 2020.
