A UMU study concludes that only one in four young people accessing the internet is controlled by an adult (16/01/2017)

An investigation carried out by professors of the Faculties of Education and Psychology of the University of Murcia (UMU) has concluded that only one in four young people who access the internet have adult control, despite the role of Family as a protector against the risks of children with the new technologies of information and communication.

This role, according to the study, is carried out mainly by parents, followed by older siblings, also observing that daughters are usually the most controlled because of the feeling of their greatest fragility.

As for the use of the computer and the mobile phone, research indicates that it is widespread among adolescents, who spend between one and two hours on average a day, together with five percent of boys and thirteen percent of Girls who spend a daily time exceeding four hours.

On the other hand, it is stressed that victims of bullying are more supervised during the connection to the network than the aggressors.

The conclusions point, on the other hand, that secondary school students are more involved in the problematic use of new information technologies than their high school classmates, "implying a risk associated with age, because at a younger age , Greater possibility of addiction ".

To perform the work, the authors analyzed a sample composed of 1,350 schoolchildren from 21 centers in the Region of Murcia, both public and private, concerted and non-concerted.

The study, which has been published in the journal Anales de Psicología, published by UMU together with the Official College of Psychologists of the Region, was carried out by Professors Pilar Arnaiz, Fuensanta Cerezo, Ana M. Giménez and Javier Jerónimo Maquilón.
