The UMU shows the future students the professional exits of their titles (10/01/2017)

The University of Murcia (UMU) today presented a project aimed both to help future college students in the choice of degree and to minimize dropout rates in first-year students.

The project, denominated OrientUM, will consist of sessions in which teachers and educators will inform in detail the pre-university students (ESO, Bachillerato, Vocational Training and Adult Education) and their families of the profiles and professional exits of the different degrees of the University Of Murcia.

The sessions, with free attendance until full capacity, will be held between January and February in the University Social Center, in the Espinardo campus, and in the Paraninfo, La Merced campus, mainly.

The first of the 15 planned sessions will be held this Thursday, 12, at the Social Center and will be dedicated to the degrees of Pharmacy, Dentistry and Medicine.

Orientum, which has been presented by the rector of the educational institution, José Orihuela, and the Minister of Education and Universities, Maribel Sánchez-Mora, also contemplates the implementation of training actions for first-year students with a feeling of maladjustment With respect to the chosen career.

In these sessions, which are intended to help students at risk of abandonment and reorient them in their university career, different alternatives will be announced and will work on self-knowledge and the development of personal skills.

These sessions will be face-to-face and online and will take place during the months of March and April.

All these actions are complemented with the guide of professional exits that the UMU makes available to the students, but also of professionals in orientation, teaching and productive work, for decision making and career planning.

The guide, along with the sessions, has been prepared by the Employment Information and Orientation Center (COIE), under the Vice-rectorate for Transfer, Entrepreneurship and Employment, headed by Professor Francisca Tomás.

During the presentation, held in the Convalecencia building, the vice rector pointed out that we are facing an "ambitious" project, which is "the result of the experience and continued work on labor insertion" of the University of Murcia.

Counselor Sánchez-Mora, for her part, who said that the COIE is a national benchmark among university vocational guidance centers, has also emphasized the importance of fine-tuning a student's vocation with their professional outings and with the Good career course you choose.

"It is everyone's responsibility," he said.

Finally, the Rector Orihuela, after praising the work of the IOC, has expressed his opinion that the best professional exit is that "young people self-limit themselves for what they truly love."

When this happens, said the rector, "they acquire the greatest degree of freedom and will end up studying what they have to study, which is what enables them, in a changing world like today, to face the labor market."
