The city removes barriers to rediscover the Segura River and recover its historical relationship (04/01/2017)

The City Council obtains the authorization of the Hydrographic Confederation to open a new access to the river next to the Iron Bridge.

"Terrazas del Cauce" is the most important urban action of Murcia River, which includes the creation of a wooded park of 4.200 m2 and a leisure area.

The historic relationship between the city and the Segura River in the past will begin to recover space this year with the creation of the new access to the channel, next to the Iron Bridge.

The Councilor for Town Planning, Environment and Huerta, Antonio Navarro, explained today that the Hydrographic Confederation has given the pertinent authorization, allowing the City Council to start the actions for the tender of the technical project, budgeted at 3.7 million euros.

The estimated execution time is estimated at one year and its development is the most important urban action of the Murcia River project, one of the unique elements of the new city model.

In the XVIII, a great channeling wall is projected and constructed to the north of the River, creating wooded areas and changing meanders, while this wall and the Malecón, aligned and protected the city of the floods.

The channeling of the Segura River to its passage through the urban helmet realized at the end of the 50s of the last century to avoid floods entailed the confinement of the water sheet between the two walls of masonry that today configure the urban image of the same.

Recover the natural slope

Until then, the channel had a much greater width, reaching, in the area of the Iron Bridge, to the limits of the present road of Lieutenant Flomesta.

This wall, despite having access stairs to the channel, has definitely separated the citizen from direct contact with the water sheet.

The project that arises now - called Terrazas del Cauce - intends to reverse this situation and return to the river the place of privilege that once had.

To do this, the intervention will consist of recovering the natural slope that historically occupied the disappeared Parque de Ruiz Hidalgo, demolishing for that a channeling front, of about 50 linear meters, and thus generating a direct pedestrian access that will connect with the foil Water in that area.

Its location, close to the Iron Bridge and approximately half of the 1,8 km of urban route of the river, will provide a great versatility of use to access both the bike lane and the river ride raised in this margin.

The slope is projected with a gentle slope that will allow the maximum accessibility, the descent of boats, bicycles or simply for the walk next to the channel.

Nearly 5,000 m2 of terraces and gardens

It also includes the creation of a terraced area of 600 m2 on the strip of wall to be demolished to generate living areas and river observation, generating a new leisure and recreational area called to become a future reference in the urban landscape.

This was explained by Antonio Navarro, who was accompanied by the Councilor for Modernization, Urban Quality and Participation, José Guillén, and the technical manager of the office of Huerta, Jesus López.

In this way, a wooded park with an area of 4,210 m2 will be generated, flood-flooded, where it is planned to install a large screen for the projection of all kinds of events, concerts, children's shows or summer films.

Murcia River in seven steps

Murcia River, incorporated into the Huerta Action Plan, includes seven complementary actions that the City Council intends to undertake with the objective of "restoring to Segura the protagonism that should never have been lost as an element of the municipality", said Antonio Navarro, who anticipates that for It "we are working on the revitalization of the 24 kilometers of its channel through the city and districts, but, especially, the enhancement of the urban stretch."

In order to realize this last purpose, the Department of Urbanism, Environment and Huerta has the permission of Confederation to execute the project of access to the river.

In addition, six other action programs are in different phases of development: intervention in meanders, park west, park east, park of head of Contraparada, revegetation of motorcycles and adaptation of channel.
