The Mayor thanks all the groups for their unanimous support for this document which underlines "the professionalism of all public officials who, from the outset, have collaborated in minimizing the effects of the rains."

For 75 years Murcia did not suffer a similar storm of rain, with an average of 172 liters per square meter, more than half the usual volume corresponding to a whole year.

The Plenary of the City Council approved this morning the institutional statement of gratitude to all those people and professionals whose work has contributed to alleviate the effects of heavy rains recorded this past weekend.

The mayor thanked all the municipal groups for their unanimous support for this statement which highlights the "pride and gratitude towards all Murcia, the greatness of spirit and solidarity of the people of Murcia"

The document also expresses "the most sincere thanks and admiration for the professionalism and temperance displayed by all public officials who, from the outset, have collaborated in minimizing the effects of the rains."

"Each professional knew what his job was, what he had to do and what actions were priorities.

We have emergency services that all Murcia should be very proud of. "

"Local Police, Firefighters, National Police, Civil Guard and volunteers of Civil Protection have once again shown indisputable samples of their professionalism and good work.

Its members are well prepared and these days have made it clear again. "

The Corporation also wanted to highlight the work "of the Social Emergency Service of the City, because safety is essential, but it is no less necessary to have the support needed to face unforeseen moments, of maximum urgency and, usually, of great confusion.

Guaranteeing to all people the coverage of basic necessities, fundamentally of housing and food, is a primordial work provided by municipal social services, which, once again, have demonstrated their full vocation of attention to others. "

Ability to react to extreme situations

Last weekend Murcia suffered an almost extreme situation at certain times.

Circumstances that test the capacity of reaction, resistance and intervention of a city in difficult times.

The rain, not only intense but also long persistent, reached unprecedented levels.

The figures show the immeasurable importance of water that has fallen in the municipality in two days: 230 l / m2 in El Valle, 209 in Reguerón and 183 in Javalí Nuevo and Sangonera la Verde.

The municipality received an average of 172 liters per square meter, which represents more than half of the usual volume corresponding to a whole year.

For 75 years Murcia had not suffered such a rain storm.

Balance of damages and coordinated work

The institutional statement also thanks "the efforts made by park and garden workers, water supply and sanitation infrastructures, lighting, maintenance of semaphore installations, transportation, telephony companies and, of course, those responsible for street cleaning and Have been an example for all.

Because their work has been essential for neighborhoods and districts to recover normality in almost 48 hours, despite the fact that there are still problems that unfortunately need more time to find a definitive solution.

"All this," the document acknowledges, "was not enough to allow the municipality to be free from this episode of heavy rains."

"The first report shows that the damages produced in public goods exceed 7.3 million euros.

The greatest damage has been recorded in the network of local roads, streets and avenues and sports facilities, sanitation, housing, schools and municipal centers.

Problems caused by the storm in parks and gardens, hydraulic networks, and electricity and traffic infrastructures have also been extensive.

To these must be added substantial damages in private homes, shops, industries and areas of orchard and the countryside of Murcia.

"From the first moment we are working hard to solve every problem.

Of course, we will request the aids and subsidies that correspond to us, but our level of exigency will not end there. "

"We can do nothing to control nature when it manifests its excessive force, but it is in our hands and it is our obligation to have the infrastructures and the technical means to control or at least try to mitigate the consequences of these atmospheric atmospheres" , Concludes the statement approved by the Plenary.
