The bioactive liquid arises from a line of research with stem cells isolated from the wisdom teeth (DPPSC) of the Regenerative Medicine Research Institute of UIC Barcelona UIC Barcelona and the UCAM discover a liquid that stops the pyorrhea and parti (13/12/2016)

This discovery blocks the rejection of implants and reduces the waiting time of their fixation from three months to fifteen days

Barcelona, December 13, 2016.- Researchers from the Regenerative Medicine Research Institute of the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC Barcelona) and the Catholic University of Murcia (UCAM) have patented a bioactive liquid (Bone Bioactive Liquid) Therapeutic revolution in patients with pyorrhea.

The biomaterial favors bone and gingival regeneration in a way that avoids inexorable tooth loss.

This is a major advance for this disease, which affects a percentage between 16% and 30% of Spaniards over 35, according to an oral health survey published by the Council of Dentists of Spain (2010).

The pyorrhea arises with the inflammation and infection of the bones that support the teeth, which causes the disunity between both elements and the loss of the seconds.

In fact, the so-called periodontitis is the main cause of denture loss in adults.

The liquid discovered attracts to the damaged area bone stem cells, or osteoprogenitor cells, which adhere, proliferate and end up differentiating to mineralized bone matrix, or in the same: mature bone.

This generation of bone causes that the union with the teeth is much greater and avoids the fall.

Bone Bioactive Liquid has an important second application in the treatment of periimplantitis, an inflammation that occurs after the insertion of a titanium implant after one to three years.

In this case, the fluid also acts by attracting bone stem cells, which prevents inflammation of the tissues surrounding the implant and its possible loss.

"Rejection is one of the challenges facing all implant companies, especially in patients with osteoporosis. They have been investigating how to deal with bone loss for years," says Dr. Maher Atari, director of the Regenerative Medicine Research Institute and discoverer Of the stem cells of the wisdom teeth (DPPSC).

The liquid was first developed from this line of research and from the results of two doctoral theses.

Subsequently, it was tested in vivo in an animal model under the direction of Dr. José Luis Calvo Guirado director of the International Chair of Research in Dentistry of the UCAM.

Implants are widely used in orthopedic surgery and dentistry.

In order for their bone fixation to be durable, they need to generate mineralized bone matrix.

"This process usually takes between three and six months. With the expansion of this new liquid, the time is reduced to fifteen days, which eliminates uncertainty," continues Dr. Atari in what is now the third application of Bone Bioactive Liquid.

"The process of making the new liquid is neither complicated nor expensive and its handling in surgical procedures is simple," argues Dr. Atari.

It has the capacity to be used with any type of titanium surface and its efficiency and stability have been well analyzed, so it has the optimum conditions for its use in humans.

In fact, currently UIC Barcelona and UCAM are in negotiations with several important companies of the sector for the license of the patent.

About the Regenerative Medicine Research Institute of UIC Barcelona

The Regenerative Medicine Research Institute of UIC Barcelona led by Dr. Maher Atari wants to contribute to the development of regenerative medicine from adult stem cell research and to discover or improve therapies and diagnostic systems aimed at alleviating human suffering caused by diseases Chronic and injuries.

Researchers at the Regenerative Medicine Research Institute, led by Dr. Atari in collaboration with Dr. Lluís Giner, dean of the UIC Barcelona School of Dentistry, published in 2012 in the Journal of Cell Science the protocol for isolating pluripotent stem cells Of the dental pulp of the third molar (wisdom tooth), and caused a before and after in the advance of regenerative medicine.

They also discovered that these adult cells were able to regenerate bone, liver and neuronal tissues.

Its mode of extraction was later patented.

Since then, the Institute headed by Dr. Maher Atari is researching in this line and one of the achievements is the Bone Bioactive Liquid.

The Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC Barcelona) was born in 1997 with the objective of offering a quality university education and promoting research to serve society.

Connected to the business world and with a marked international character, she teaches thirteen degrees and some sixty graduate programs in two campuses located in Barcelona and Sant Cugat (General Hospital of Catalonia).

At the Health Campus Sant Cugat are located the Faculty of Dentistry and the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.

About the Catholic University of Murcia

The Catholic University of Murcia UCAM has been betting from its beginnings 20 years ago by a research of quality, whose results can be extrapolated to society, impacting on its improvement and growth.

For this purpose alone this year has invested 15 million euros in research, mainly in the area of health, which has also had as a consequence, the increase of publications in magazines with international impact, such as Sciencie, Nature or Cell.

A good example of this bet is the line of work with Professor Juan Carlos Izpisua, director of the Chair of Developmental Biology at UCAM, and Doctor Honoris Causa for this University.

Dr. Izpisua leads several investigations of international importance on cellular reprogramming, among them with which he tries to obtain human organs in pigs to be transplanted in diseased people;

Work promoted by the Catholic University of Murcia and developed together with an international team of scientists.

The UCAM has an International School of Doctorate in which 700 students are enrolled;

Of them, 15% from outside Spain, shows in addition to the strong involvement of the institution also by the internationalization.

It is also worth highlighting in the field of research that UCAM has been the first university in Spain to promote an Industrial Doctorates program (already in its fourth edition), which allows companies to incorporate their young researchers in order to develop His doctoral theses, in a co-financed manner;

In addition to enhancing innovation.
