The City Council removes barriers to promote the full inclusion of persons with disabilities (02/12/2016)

Through joint work with federations, foundations and associations to develop their projects.

The Governing Board has given approval to two agreements in this area, which will allow, on the one hand, to carry out training in the City and, on the other hand, develop a plan to access a sheltered housing.

The City of Murcia works, through the Councils of Social Rights and Modernization of Administration, Urban Quality and Participation, to eliminate the barriers faced by people with some type of intellectual or physical disability and facilitate their employment.

With this objective, actions are promoted so that the disabled people collective enjoys the same opportunities as other citizens, adopting measures that contribute to eliminate discriminatory actions.

In this sense, the Department of Social Rights is managed by public resources and services aimed at these people and provides ongoing support and coordination with foundations, federations and associations in this area, with the aim of achieving full social inclusion and rights Which are their own, in order to improve their quality of life.

In 2015, the area managed by Conchita Ruiz granted 275,000 euros of grants for the implementation of 41 projects directly promoted by disability organizations, aimed at improving the quality of life of people.

Agreements of the Governing Board

Coinciding with the celebration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, which is being commemorated tomorrow, day 3, the Governing Board has approved at its meeting today, initiatives aimed at this group.

On the one hand, it has been approved a collaboration agreement with Assido that will allow young people with Down Syndrome practice training in the City.

In this way, it seeks to promote actions aimed at promoting the social and labor insertion of people with intellectual disabilities, promoting their work capacity and employability, through the implementation of pre-work practices, and their continuity in the effective occupation of the job Through their recruitment in training, in order to obtain adequate theoretical and practical training and the necessary experience in the workplace.

Along with this agreement with Assido, the City Council has several agreements with different associations to promote the training of people with disabilities, such as those carried out with Famdif-Cocemfe, Ceom and Astrapace, among other groups.

Assido currently has four centers in the municipality: three in Murcia capital dedicated to early care, support for schooling and training and transition to adult life, and housing for the training of users in independent living;

And an occupational center in Casillas.

On the other hand, the Department of Social Rights has granted a grant to implement the project 'Sheltered housing for people with intellectual disabilities' of CEOM, to access a sheltered housing.

During this year, the Department of Social Rights has also facilitated care and support to associations: AMUPHEB;

Cystic fibrosis;

Paraplegics and Large Physical Disabled in the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia;

New Horizon of Murcia;

Early-stage Parkinson's disease (EPIT-ENIT) and federations: FESORMU;

AFIM and ASTEAMUR.

Ruiz Caballero recalled that "around 15% of the world's population, or one billion people, live with some kind of disability, so we must promote actions that promote their integration into society, promoting equal opportunities", of This way, added the holder of Social Rights, "we will remove the barriers to create an inclusive and accessible society for all."

An accessible city

In this regard, Conchita Ruiz recalled the work being done at the disability work table, in order to maintain a close relationship between the administration and the 54 disability entities, in order to coordinate actions and Make a collection of their demands aimed at achieving a city 100% accessible to all.

To complete the preparation of the Universal Accessibility Municipal Plan, a motor group has been set up with technicians from all municipal areas involved in the defined strategic areas: awareness and social participation;

Mobility and citizen security;

Spaces for public use;

Public Buildings;

Communication and citizen information;

Culture, tourism and leisure;

Sports and health;

Education, training and employment;

And social services.

Transport aids

Aware of the difficulties that people with mobility problems encounter in accessing collective transport, the Council of Social Rights approves each year a call for aid to assist with commuting by taxi.

Specifically, 195 people benefited in 195, most of them women (64%), half of them between the ages of 61 and 90.

The City Council allocated almost € 85,000 to this aid.

The objective of helping to facilitate the movement of people with mobility difficulties is also achieved by another line of action, such as subsidies granted to taxi professionals to renew their adapted vehicles.

The effort made by both the sector and the City Council has allowed Murcia to be the first city in the region to meet the 5% share of accessible taxis.
