Health organizes a family sports day to promote physical activity as the best prescription to improve health (26/11/2016)

Aimed at patients who have performed the cardiac rehabilitation program and their families, the initiative aimed to present different modalities of exercise and the resources available in the environment to have an active lifestyle.

The City Council has spent 10 years promoting physical activity in the municipality through the "Program 4/40: give the first step, take care of your health" in which currently participate 600 people distributed in 21 groups.

The Mayor, José Ballesta, participated in the opening ceremony of the "Cambia el paso", held in the Prince of Asturias Pavilion, which also has a children's sports library.

One of the basic pillars of the prevention of cardiovascular disease is the promotion of active life habits and, for this, it is fundamental to promote the regular practice of physical activity and to avoid sedentary attitudes in the adult population.

It is undoubtedly the best recipe for improving health and well-being.

In Murcia, the issue is even more relevant, given the prevalence of leisure time inactivity in the adult population, which stands at 44.9%, surpassing the Spanish average by 10 points.

In the case of women, the situation is even more alarming, since half of them do not perform any exercise.

Murcia also has worse indicators of physical activity, given that only 43.2% of adults walk daily and 46.2% practice sports weekly.

The Prince of Asturias Pavilion was the scene this morning of the day "Cambia el paso", organized to promote physical activity in cardiac rehabilitation patients of the General Universitario Reina Hospital. To revert these data and to promote an active lifestyle among citizens, Sofia, as well as their families.

The attendees have been able to know different modalities of exercise practice as well as resources and assets available to the City Council to practice physical activity.

The activity has been jointly organized by the Department of Sports and Health and the Cardiac Rehabilitation Unit of the Reina Sofía General University Hospital, with the collaboration of the Murcian Association of Patients for Cardiac Rehabilitation, the Murcian Delegation of the Nursing Association In Cardiology and the contribution of fresh fruit for a hearty lunch by Mercamurcia.

The Mayor, José Ballesta, who participated in the opening of the day, highlighted the work done by the City Council to promote physical activity in the municipality.

In this sense, he recalled that the Department of Sports and Health has been promoting physical activity in groups of neighbors in different neighborhoods and districts of the municipality for 10 years, through the "Program 4/40: take the first step, take care of your health."

This program is applied to groups of neighbors led by a professional monitor, organized to walk on routes designed in the neighborhood near their homes, four days a week, forty minutes each day.

79% of the participants are referred by the doctor from their health center and, after participating in the program, perceive important health benefits such as stress reduction (55%) and improvement of social relations (82%) as well Such as weight loss (58.5%), decreased glucose (40%), cholesterol (51%) and hypertension (49%).

Currently, around 600 people are involved in 21 groups.
