A city for children (23/11/2016)

Murcia has the highest percentage of children and young people among the large Spanish cities.

After-school activities, holiday camps, school reinforcement activities and absenteeism control are some of the proposals that the City Council develops through the program of childhood and adolescence, which has allowed Murcia to join the child-friendly cities granted by Unicef .

The work carried out by the City Council aimed at the well-being of children and adolescents has allowed Murcia to be placed in the place of honor reserved for child-friendly cities, a seal with which Unicef ​​recognizes the development of effective policies to improve quality Of children's lives, defending their rights, encouraging their participation and creating a more livable environment, following the precepts of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The Mayor, José Ballesta, thanked Unicef ​​for recognizing the work done in the care of children and adolescents, their protection and their social promotion, because "although it is a commitment and a duty of public administrations, in this case It is an essential effort since in these years the basic training levels, the healthy patterns of behavior and social skills necessary to form autonomous, responsible and socially integrated adults are acquired. "

Ballesta, accompanied by the Councilor for Social Rights, Conchita Ruiz, attended this morning the presentation of the municipalities of the region recognized this year as Child Friendly Cities, together with UNICEF Unicef ​​Murcia Committee, Amparo Marzal, and The mayors of Cieza, Pascual Lucas, San Javier, José Miguel Luengo, Archena, Patricia Fernandez, and Lorquí, Joaquín Hernández.

The highest percentage of minors among large cities

The Childhood and Adolescence program of the City Council is designed by and for the minors who reside in the municipality.

For everyone, whatever their needs, circumstances or demands.

Its purpose is to ensure the welfare of all of them.

Murcia last year had 81,664 children under 16 years of age, 18.5% of the total population, 2.5 points more than in the national context (16%).

Among the 10 main cities in Spain, Murcia is by far the one with the highest percentage of minors compared to the total population, followed by Málaga (17,13), Sevilla (16,13), Palma de Mallorca (16,10 ) And Zaragoza (15,16).

Also noteworthy is the increase of 11.4% of the population under 16 years registered in the municipality between 2004 and 2015.

In order to respond with the appropriate level of attention and promotion to the needs of children and adolescents, Social Rights has a comprehensive project of actions that allows prioritizing programs and setting up a networked system capable of improving effectiveness.

Extracurricular activities, camps on holidays, school reinforcement activities, absenteeism control, sports schools, promotion of reading or workshops for the promotion of healthy habits with some of the activities available to minors.

Individual care or family environment

The work is directed to different areas, from the support to the families, to the complement of the educational process and of schooling, as well as promoting the playful aspects, the sensitization on the rights and enhancing the specific measures for the attention, protection and promotion of the Children who are in a situation of vulnerability, difficulty or social risk.

Four lines of intervention form the Infancy and Adolescence program.

On the one hand, coverage of basic needs, including both financial aid and accompanying tasks and guidance to improve family dynamics or individualized intervention in situations of lack of protection.

Complementary actions to the educational system are the second line of action.

These include the monitoring of children at risk, intervention in absenteeism problems, school mediation, support for schooling or school reinforcement programs.

The third route is leisure and leisure activities, which give the opportunity to participate in alternative activities in schools and after school hours, in summer schools and camps during the holidays, in workshops organized in the municipal centers of the neighborhoods Preferential attention or events planned for significant dates such as carnival, local festivals, etc.

Lastly, measures to promote awareness and awareness of the rights of children constitute the fourth route of intervention, which focuses in particular on the program it produces each year on the occasion of Children's Rights Day.
