Conference at the University of Murcia addresses the importance of arid ecosystems and their biodiversity (23/11/2016)

The assembly hall "Hermenegildo Lumeras de Castro" of the Faculty of Chemistry will host tomorrow, Thursday, at 13:00 hours, the lecture by Professor Fernando Tomás Maestre, which will focus on "The importance of biodiversity for the functioning of ecosystems Arid ".

Maestre, a professor at the Rey Juan Carlos University, focuses his research on the study of the ecology of these environments and the response of their ecosystems to global climate change.

In the conference he will explain the work he develops with his research group to exemplify the importance of biodiversity as a determinant of the functioning of ecosystems.

"Biodiversity of arid ecosystems has not traditionally been as well studied as that of ecosystems located in tropical and temperate climates, even though they account for 45% of the land area and account for almost 40% of the population Human, "says the researcher.

"However, he adds, we are increasingly working to highlight their importance in providing ecosystem services that, such as maintaining soil fertility, erosion control and climate regulation by setting Atmospheric CO2, play a key role for the development and sustainability of our planet. "

The activity is organized by the Unit for Scientific Culture and Promotion of Research (UCC-Prinum) of the University of Murcia.
