Coral Discantus seeks the best sonority in the Cathedral for the Mass of Coronation (18/11/2016)

The II International Cycle of Organ that is celebrated in the Cathedral of Murcia will finalize the 1 of December with a special concert in which the Coral Discantus, accompanied to the organ by Carlos Rafael Pérez, recovers of its repertoire and will interpret the 'Mass of the Coronation 'By Mozart.

During this week and several more days "we will be testing different locations in several possible spaces of the Cathedral to achieve the best possible sonority," explains Coral Discantus director Angel Carrillo.

He affirms that "it is difficult and at the same time exciting to face the difficulties of this Mass of Coronation, accompanied by an instrument as magnificent as the Merklin-Schütze organ of our Cathedral."

The organ Merklin-Schütze was the first monumental organ with symphonic characteristics that settled in Spain, constitutes one of the most important pieces of the Spanish musical heritage and its importance is recognized in the European organistic environments.

The instrument was inaugurated in the Cathedral of Murcia in July 1857, which until then had two Baroque organs that were lost in the fire in 1854. It was then that the bishop of the Diocese of Cartagena and the Cabildo, with the Advice of Hilarión Eslava, ordered a new piece to the house Merklin-Schütze.

Between 2005 and 2008 the organ was subjected to intense restoration.

Coronation Mass for organ, choir, soloists and orchestra in D major (KV 317) is a sacred masterpiece of the classicist repertoire composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

This is the sixteenth Mass written by Mozart.

Mozart wrote this mass for the Easter celebrations of 1779, and like all the music composed in this period shows the new maturity of the composer.

It seems that the nickname of this mass is because it was interpreted in Vienna during the celebrations of the coronation of the emperor Leopoldo II in 1791 or the one of the emperor Francisco II in 1792.
