The schoolchildren take the floor (17/11/2016)

143 students from schools in Aljucer, Javalí Nuevo, Santiago el Mayor and Murcia are leading a children's plenary to express their opinions in defense of their rights, reflecting this year especially on child poverty.

The Mayor has given up his place and, accompanied by other members of the Corporation, including those responsible for Social Rights and Education, Relations with Universities and Heritage, has given the floor and listened attentively to the interventions of the minors.

The Mayor, José Ballesta, has ceded his position in the presidency of the Plenary Hall to those who today have become the main players in the debate.

Thus, 143 schoolchildren, accompanied by their teachers, have adopted the role of Mayor and councilors of the Corporation and have taken the floor to discuss their rights, reflecting this year in a special way on child poverty.

José Ballesta, reminded them that the city is in luck these days, since this week the Councilor for Social Rights, Conchita Ruiz, has collected the seal that recognizes Murcia as a Childhood City of Children.

The award, given by Unicef, confirms that the City Council applies the norms and principles of the Convention on the Rights of Children and develops strategies and measures to ensure their welfare.

One of these activities is the Children's Plenary, which today has as main participants the 6th elementary students of the schools Escultor Gonzalez Moreno (Aljucer), Rio Segura (Javalí Nuevo), José Loustau (Murcia) and Santiago el Mayor, who Have been received by the Mayor, José Ballesta, along with the Councilor for Education, Relations with Universities and Heritage, Rafael Gómez, and other members of the Corporation.

The minors, protagonists of the municipal day

Four spokespersons - one from each center - have held the presidency of the show and have read the Declaration on the Rights of the Child recognized by the UN that they have prepared in their classes.

In addition, two students from each center participated.

Ultimately, it is a question of making children protagonists in the defense of their personal rights, while at the same time initiating full and active participation in public life.

This morning they have been discussing child poverty, recalling that the United Nations recognizes that all children "have the right to fully develop their social, emotional, cognitive and physical potential, regardless of the circumstances of their families."

However, there are children in the world who have limited opportunities to acquire those skills to escape poverty, understood as "shortages or shortcomings necessary to live", not only on the economic aspect, but also on social exclusion and Lack of access to services such as adequate housing, education, balanced diet, cultural and sports activities, etc.
