Urbanism invites the districts affected by the train tracks to present ideas for the future green path that will link Alquerías and Los Dolores (16/11/2016)

The City Council begins a process of reflection and consensus to start the project of creating a green, cycling and pedestrian route that will connect eight districts of the Southern Coast by the old route of the railway.

They are 8 kilometers of corridor and almost 200,000 square meters of surface that will be transformed into a zone of leisure and recreation, continuing thus with the actions for the recovery of spaces for the citizen use.

Murcia is currently facing the opportunity to develop one of the most ambitious and decisive actions for eight pedanias of the Southern Coast.

The occasion comes after the signing of the agreement with ADIF that has allowed to give to the City Hall the old railway line that runs between Los Dolores and Alquerías, whose recovery now for the use of citizens will have a fundamental importance for the improvement of the quality of life of About 47,000 people who populate these districts, but also for those who visit them attracted by that green corridor.

The Councilor for Town Planning, Environment and Huerta, Antonio Navarro, believes that this action is called to become "one of the strategic projects" of the municipality, which now opens a process of participation with the districts, who "want Listen and incorporate their ideas ".

For this reason, this morning has held a meeting to which were called the presidents of municipal councils affected by the project: Zeneta, Alquerías, Los Ramos, Torreagüera, Beniaján, San Jose de la Vega, Los Garres and Los Dolores.

The purpose of the call was to explain directly the terms and implications of the agreement with ADIF, in order to initiate a process of participation, reflection and dialogue about possible actions that can be carried out.

Close a wound

Although the alternatives are diverse and some criteria must be established prior to its design, the indisputable premise is that the 8 kilometers of railway track and 200,000 square meters of surface area that the municipality earns will transform into a green, pedestrian and cycling path that will link the Eight nuclei of population.

It is a demand long demanded by these districts, since the trains stopped to transit by these routes 8 years ago, being since then in disuse.

Now, the Department of Town Planning, Environment and Huerta has the opportunity to start the work to remodel the environment, to become a new area for leisure and recreation of the neighbors, thus giving a step in the projects of " Recovery of spaces for the citizen use and closing a wound that had the south ", explains Navarro.

Once obtained the assignment that authorizes the City Council to act on the land, "the next step will be to write the corresponding projects and carry out the necessary actions," adds the councilman.

The municipal budgets of 2017 will incorporate an endowment to start the financing of this intervention.

Unique and exclusive destination

There is no doubt that the unique and exclusive destination of the environment will be the creation of green, cycling and pedestrian paths.

However, there are several alternatives to carry it out.

One of the possible solutions is to foresee a soft itinerary, based on compacted sand directly on the ballast, replacing the platform of the tracks to make them practicable for the pedestrian and the cyclist, with a width of about 5 meters and planting trees in Both sides.

On the other hand, in the route there are singular points that require detailed study, as is the case of the existing stations, transverse connections, differences of grazing, road intersections, dismantling of unused elements, urban furniture, etc ...

In any case, the road that will lead to a definitive solution, once obtained the assignment of the lands, is put in place today, with the meeting maintained with the presidents of the municipal councils affected and the beginning of the technical work previous to the Drafting of the project and its financing.

The voices of the districts

In this first contact, the representatives of the municipal councils have agreed on the need to guarantee the north / south permeability, as well as the roads that arise along the itinerary, allowing the compatibility of the rooted and pedestrian traffic.

In this regard, all those present were present, but especially Francisco Hernández and Lidia Almagro, who preside over the boards of Beniaján and San José de La Vega, whose core population is crossed by roads.

For his part, Antonio Ramírez, from Los Garres, proposed that the study of the possibility of connecting this green path with the section of the Alquibla irrigation pipeline that is piped together, linking Algezares with La Alberca.

Similarly, the president of Los Dolores, Pedro Ángel Morales, was interested in the construction of the storm tank, which could be located in that environment, as well as the accessibility of the passage of the Mota de los Alemanes to that of Reguerón.

The permeability of the roads is a complaint shared by all attendees, also by the representatives of Zeneta, Alquerías, Torreagüera and Los Ramos.

The latter houses the only Adif constructions that have not been incorporated in this agreement with Adif - the Beniaján station either, but unlike the previous ones, it is in use - and that they are not in condition to be used without before submitting them to rehabilitation.

Land bank of the orchard

Although the central theme of this morning's meeting was the green path of the Southern Coast, Antonio Navarro took the opportunity to present to the representatives of the municipal boards the details related to the creation of the land bank of the orchard, an initiative That allows to manage and recover the unproductive lands existing in the Huerta and put them in yield, putting in contact to disused landowners with people interested in leasing them for their cultivation.

The proposal favors the socioeconomic development of Huerta through a socially and environmentally sustainable model, as well as increasing the agricultural activity of the area and promoting the creation of auxiliary activities, thus enhancing a productive and profitable garden.
