Let's change Murcia brings toxic pesticides to debate in a day with experts (11/11/2016)

As part of its campaign against the use of toxic pesticides, such as glyphosate, Cambiemos Murcia gathered experts on these substances in the Moneo building on Thursday to put on the table alternatives that are more respectful of the environment and health.

"A threat in our parks and food" was the title of the event which also included Huerta Viva, El Verdecillo and Ecologistas en Acción, and which involved Ramón Navia, an agronomist, ecological farmer and member of Ecologistas en Acción;

Carlos Zafra, spokesman for the Association of Beekeepers AA-RM Coag and veterinarian, and Emma Martinez, from the group of Toxicology and Veterinary Forensic University of Murcia.

Navia recalled that, after a while, all toxic pesticides that come to market are eventually banned due to health effects, to be sold in third countries with trade agreements with the European Union, so that in the end "they reach our table" .

That is why, he said, it is necessary to "combat the false myth that organic farming produces less and should be promoted by promoting consumption in schools and hospitals."

The agronomist of Ecologistas en Acción also denounced that multinationals are getting natural products such as cinnamon, which serve as insecticides, to pass such exhaustive controls "as substances that could kill you with a single drop."

Emma Martínez López, professor of toxicology at the University of Murcia, spoke about the effects of pesticides on health and the environment, making it clear that "zero risk at toxicological level does not exist, but that the use of Appropriate techniques could reduce harmful effects ".

Carlos Zafra, a spokesman for the Association of Beekeepers (AARN-Coag), released the problems that cause pesticides in bees.

"Misuse of pesticides ruin many beekeepers and contaminate honey and waxes," he said.

With environmental education campaigns, Zafra added, many hives could be saved by taking such simple measures as, for example, fumigating at night.

In addition, by improving training, farmers could have access to more suitable products, since "they are often sold not as economical or efficient as they are to the company"

The day ended with a debate in which some farmers took part.
