The UCAM-Santander Chair in Entrepreneurship in the Agrifood Sector presented this morning the findings of the research study 'approach to sizing Agrifood System of the Region of Murcia', based on the European methodology of EUROSTAT

The UCAM-Santander Chair in Entrepreneurship in the Agrifood Sector of the Catholic University of Murcia (UCAM) has presented this morning at the Campus of Los Jerónimos the conclusions drawn from the research study 'approach to sizing Agrifood System of the Region of Murcia ', which shows that the contribution of industry agriculture to regional GDP, incorporating ancillary industries as inputs and services, transport and trade, stood at 21.4%, which translates into a total of 5,215 million euros , while the contribution to employment corresponds to 28.4%, equivalent to 123,200 employees.

This report, which seeks to value the relevance of this system represents in the regional economy, taking, especially its characterization, economic contribution, employability, innovation and ancillary industries, is based on the EUROSTAT 'from farm to fork' approach, which adopts the concept of 'system' as the set of activities related to the food industry activities, and noted for incorporating all goods and services throughout the production cycle and distribution are part of the value chain.

In the report, they attended by the president of the UCAM, José Luis Mendoza;

the director of the Chair, Antonio Cerdá;

Secretary General of Agriculture and Food, Carlos Cabanas;

Murcia commercial director of Banco Santander, Jerome Sanchez and researchers attended;

representatives of entities and organizations in the food sector;

the Ministry of Water, Agriculture and Environment of the Region;

Hydrographic Confederation of Segura (CHS);

and financial institutions.

During that period, it has been revealed that the food system of the region noted for its high specialization process, its competitiveness, its high employability as well as their highest standards in quality and food safety, why, in the words Cabanas, "this study allows to value the presence of this sector as the key to the economic recovery of our country's national industry."

On the main reference figures Survey (LFS), it has been added to this industry accounts for 27.9% of regional employment, equivalent to 146,700 occupied, while the contribution to wage employment corresponds to 28.4% with 123.00 employees.

Murcia, second region in total export of fruits and vegetables using only 3'7% of irrigation water consumed in Spain

During his speech, Cerdá stressed that "the food industry in the region is one of the basic pillars of growth of the Murcian economy and its main export sector", ensuring that Murcia is the "second region in total export of fruit and vegetables".

Also, the director of the Chair stressed that since 2010 the Region of Murcia has gone from exporting 1.8 million tons of fruits and vegetables, to 2.5 million tons in 2015, being in the same year 47.3% of the corresponding regional exports products of this sector.

In addition, he recalled that Murcia is an international leader in the use of cutting-edge water technologies, and that "only 3'7% of the water goes to irrigation in Spain, Murcia managed to produce more than 20% national agricultural exports ".
