The City Council and the UCPT work hand in hand to analyze the territorial model of Murcia and adapt to the new social reality (19/10/2016)

José Ballesta and Alejandro Diaz signed the agreement for the implementation of the research and development of the Environmental Monitoring and Analysis of Municipal Planning.

Ballesta: "This technical and specialized analysis will allow us to have an objective diagnosis of how the city has evolved and plan for future growth in a sustainable and orderly manner".

The Mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, and the rector of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, Alejandro Diaz, today signed the cooperation agreement between the two institutions for the implementation of the research and development of the Environmental Monitoring and Analysis Municipal planning.

"This joint collaboration between the city and an institution of reference not only in our region but in the whole of Spain, as is the Department of Urban Planning at the School of Architecture of the UPCT, enable us to have results extracted from a technical analysis specialized and rigorous, with which we can have an objective diagnosis of how it has evolved the municipality territorially and plan for future growth in a sustainable, orderly and adapted to the new social and demographic reality, "explained José Ballesta.

The municipality of Murcia has an area of ​​over 880 km2 and currently has a population of 445,000 inhabitants-what makes it the seventh largest city of Spain.

Along with updating the General Plan 2001, which has been in place 15 years, is necessary to adapt the plan to the new legislation contained in the Law on Spatial Planning and Urban Development in the Region of Murcia (LOTURM) adopted this past 2015.

The intervention of the Polytechnic University, through the Department of Urban Planning of the School of Architecture, whose team has previous experience in performing work in areas such as Orchard Murcia-, is a guarantee of objectivity, methodology and rigor in analysis of the current situation, both urban and environmental.

The focus of these joint projects, whose execution time is 15 months, will develop a methodology for analyzing and monitoring on two key areas PGOU Murcia related to the environment within the Environmental Monitoring Program;

and it is referring to the urban area and development of partial plans.

In that sense, the agreement signed today will serve to design jointly a methodology for analysis and diagnosis, which allows monitoring the degree of development of PGMO, including tracking all the changes, their urban development plans, and state current planning instruments.

Thus, with the signing of this agreement, the City and the UPCT begin preliminary work to make way for the revision of land-use planning (PGOU) of Murcia, agreed in plenary.

Next mapping flight Murcia

The signing of this agreement is in addition to other measures carried out by the city of Murcia in the same sense as the recent creation of the Department of Cartography and Urban Information.

The best in each area

The team will be composed of staff researcher UPCT, and the University of Murcia;

and staff working for the City of Murcia, as well as support staff composed mainly of university students in the specialty.

UPCT provide knowledge and experience on the subject of Group R & D + i called 'Laboratory of Urban Research', for the tasks of research, data collection, assessment and documentation necessary to support the Program of PGMO Environmental Monitoring the municipality of Murcia.

The cost of the work and studies that are the subject of this agreement is estimated at 150,000 euros, of which the UPCT finance 35%, while the city of Murcia will cover the remaining 65%.
