The Ministry of Health diffuses into the rest of the country the program on maternal and child health of the City (13/10/2016)

The Together European pilot project in Murcia notes the importance of intervening on lifestyles during pregnancy and lactation in order to improve the health of both mothers, and the current and future health of their children 16% women Murcia vulnerable social groups their babies exclusively fed with formula.

At the same time, the Ministry of Health, under the current National Strategy for Health Promotion, has proposed the dissemination of experience to other municipalities in Spain, considering it as a good geriatric practice.

The experience was raised in order to intervene on the styles of maternal and family life, in order to improve the health of both mothers and the current and future health of their children.

It has been developed by the Department of Sports and Health, which runs Felipe Coello.

Among the most important results obtained highlights the importance of social determinants of health.

Thus, it has been shown that 16% of women from vulnerable social groups Murcia feed their babies exclusively with artificial milk, showing the worst rates of breastfeeding of six European cities involved in the project (Prague, Manchester, Varna , Odense and Kolding, with Murcia).

In them, the European research project developed action in the field of protection and promotion of maternal and child health in the context of Horizon 2020 Framework Programme.

614 women protagonists

In early 2015 the first phase of diagnosis on 614 pregnant women and infants Murcia based on these results the intervention was performed.

Throughout the development of the project interventions and educational materials were designed to raise awareness, educate and train about health problems related to poor nutrition and excess weight and promote a healthy diet during preconception, pregnancy and lactation, focusing in the most vulnerable social groups.

To this end, workshops were conducted in collaboration with various associations such as Columbares, Caritas and Oblatas-, health centers and social service centers, which worked with special emphasis on healthy eating and physical activity, emotional well-being and safety of the environment.

Pregnancy, the best time to change

The project was a community approach, seeking alliances to reach the most disadvantaged groups and taking advantage of the vital stage of pregnancy as the right to make changes to healthier life styles.
