A report reveals the consolidation of the recovery in the tourism sector in the municipality (24/08/2016)

Councilman Employment, Tourism and Culture, Jesus Pacheco, accompanied by the president of the association of partners Tourism Murcia Convention Bureau, Ricardo Zamora members, and its manager, Ramón Palazón, presented in detail the data obtained after the completion of the analysis of the impact of tourism on the economy and employment in the municipality of Murcia in 2015.

Pacheco explained that "thanks to the development of this document commissioned by Tourism Murcia Convention Bureau solvent and we have accurate information that allows us to know the impact of tourism on the economy and employment in the municipality."

This comprehensive report, performed on the data last year, by a specialized company, also makes a comparison in relation to a number of indicators such as travelers, overnight stays, the average stay, the number of establishments, the reception capacity of tourist accommodation and occupancy of hotel establishments and related spending behavior of tourism demand and its components.

One of the main conclusions of the study, emphasizes Pacheco "highlights the importance of the sector for the economic development of Murcia and shows the consolidation of the sector's recovery after the fall of the indicators of activity between 2008 and 2012, as a result of the economic situation".

Also it is important to emphasize the generated data on the direct production of tourism for the city of Murcia in 2015, which has been of 65,535,863 euros (49.38% generated by leisure and cultural tourists and the rest by visitors congresses , conventions and conferences), generating a gross value added of 36,184,366 euros.

According to estimates, in 2015 tourism generated 17,428 jobs, of which 11,126 are direct jobs, 2,107 indirect jobs and 4,195 induced jobs.

About this aspect, Ricardo Zamora, points out that the data show the consolidation of the recovery in a vital sector for the city.

"For our conditions, our identity, tourism is a winning bet for progress and job creation, and the firm commitment to promote more than ever a sector is needed, with many limitations in terms of infrastructure and communications regarding other locations with which we compete, is yielding positive results. There is an urgent need in improving our infrastructure and move on, once and for all to compete on equal terms with other destinations. This city deserves it. "

Thus, between 2000 and 2015, travelers staying in hotels in the municipality of Murcia have experienced a growth of 20.35%.

Similarly, the growth of overnight stays in the same period was 13%.

Since 2000 it has grown from 296,505 passengers and 512,782 overnight stays to 356,853 passengers and 578,290 overnight stays in 2015.

In connection with overnight stays, Murcia recorded in 2015 the highest score of the last five years, a total of 578,290 overnight stays in hotels, almost to the levels of 2008 and recorded a slight increase of 0.5% especially generated foreign visitors, overnight stays increased by 5.3% over the previous year.

The council has indicated that "the evolution of the number of travelers staying in hotels and overnight stays generated in the last five years show the consolidation of the upward trend of tourism in the municipality."

As for the distribution of tourists according to their place of residence, residents in Spain (domestic tourism) which, in 2015, stayed in one of the hotel establishments of the municipality totaled 297,759, accounting for 83.44% of the total.

Meanwhile, non-resident tourists in Spain (international tourism), 59 095, representing 16.56% of the total.

The main market foreign issuer is the United Kingdom, from where 12.86% of total non-resident travelers in Spain.

Followed by Italy, from where 10.79% of foreign visitors, France, with 9.7%, Germany with 6.71%, and the United States with 3.54%.

As for the average stay of tourists staying in the hotel establishments of the municipality of Murcia, it is 1.62 days, with residents in Spain visitors who stay less time at the destination (1.5 days), while the average stay of foreign tourists is 2 days.

The development of tourism the city of Murcia has consolidated a hotel offer that stays in the past five years over 4,000 places, with an evolution in the proper growth of the volume of tourism demand.

The hotel capacity stands at 4,385 seats, representing 25.61% of all hotel rooms in the region of Murcia

As for the distribution by expenditure components of tourists, accommodation and restaurants they are the most relevant being located, respectively, 29.9% and 27.4% of spending

Note the importance of spending on cultural, recreational and leisure activities, representing 22.1% of total expenditure.

Equally important is the expenditure on purchases, representing 9.8% of the average expenditure of tourists visiting Murcia.

Last year, the Tourism Murcia Meetings attracted a total of 160,255 participants in one of the 679 organized events.

The average stay of those attending conferences and conventions was 3 days and a total of 84,687 overnight stays at hotel establishments in the city.

The conference represent 87.3% of events held in the city, and gathered to 132,026 attendees.
