Awards ceremony the short story contest I UMU about women (14/07/2016)

This morning, on the first floor of the building of convalescence, home of the Rector of the University of Murcia, was held the awards ceremony of the short story contest on women, organized by the Unit for Equality between Women and Men the University of Murcia.

The event was chaired by the Vice Chancellor of Social Accountability, Transparency and Equality at the University of Murcia, María del Carmen López Aniorte, which have accompanied Miguel Angel Perez Sanchez, promoter of the Competition and Quality Coordinator at the University of Murcia;

Eva Maria Rubio Fernández, President of the Jury and Director of the Unit for Equality between Women and Men of the University of Murcia and jurors Diana de Paco Serrano and Pascual Vera Nicholas, and Borja Moreno Buendia (Secretary of Ceumar) , replacing Eduardo Sanchez Martinez.

The winners were: Carlos Alberto Riquelme Jodar, a student of English Studies, first prize for his story: "The melody of awakening";

second prize Irene Vazquez Serrano, PhD student with his text "The joke today" and Lucia Cegarra Cuquerella, student of Law degree, third prize for "Dolores".

The winning stories will be published in the Journal of the UMU Campus in the coming days.

Eva Maria Rubio, Director of the Equality Unit, said in the ceremony that "winning texts of this first edition tell us, among other things, the ossified nature of discriminatory behavior, evidence that the change is possible and is in the hand of each person, the frenetic daily tasks with which they have to deal working mothers, as well as the particular impact that the current labor system and the financial crisis that conditions, rages and dehumanizes on women; what irrational imposition of stereotypes and gender roles leading to obviate the capabilities of each person and the irrepressible and irreversible force that has the liberation of women, because once you touched freedom no longer possible to give it up ".

Meanwhile, Vice Chancellor Lopez Aniorte, expressed satisfaction with the fact that there are initiatives like this in the UMU: "The University, transmitting knowledge and social values, must contribute actively, by different means and this contest, certainly it is a very valuable-medium, to promote real equality between women and men ".

He also commented that "It is necessary for society to react against the inequality between men and women from all areas. The government, administration, business, schools, family ... In the understanding that there are many aspects that to get better".

Finally, he welcomed the fact that among the winners will also have a man, a sign that they are increasingly involved in the work of the struggle for equality.

The intent of the contest was to reward original works of fiction and quality in the approach to issues of equality between women and men and in the treatment of stereotypes.
