Huerta Viva: "The hydraulic heritage falls while 17.6 million euros disappear" (14/07/2016)

while 17.6 million are intended to "fix" a few ditches affected by the AVE

For years activists in defense of the garden of Murcia have denounced the urgent need to undertake the protection and recovery of the irrigation network as essential for the conservation of the orchard and the microclimate of Murcia element.

Pipings and degradation of rivers, abandonment and destruction of hydraulic heritage have been normal, and recovery projects to irrigation canals and architectural heritage linked to them always the excuse of lack of budget appears.

Almost all mills, bridges, wells, and other hydraulic structures Orchard Murcia are in a borderline state, and associations Huerta Live are reported in a few years many of these elements will eventually disappear but a small budget is spent in their recovery, thus losing a rich historical and cultural heritage that is part of the identity of Murcia.

La Huerta Live association has drafted numerous recovery projects channels and mills, and even with the help of neighbors, has submitted a proposal for the Special Protection Plan Paseo del Malecón.

For example, the association has preliminarily established a total cost of landscape adaptation and restoration of all homes of the Malecón environment worth 3 million euros.

The restoration of the Mill of Love has been budgeted at 200,000 euros, and rehabilitation and environmental recovery of the major irrigation channels and Alquibla Aljufía with about 8800 meters from the Contraparada to Murcia, for 861,000 euros.

Given these figures for the rehabilitation of heritage, Huerta Live surprised as it was possible to allocate 17.6 million euros to fix the irrigation ditches affected by the route of the AVE, when the association estimates that amount that could have restored all the irrigation network of the garden of Murcia and much of its architectural heritage.

Thus we can see that there is money for what a few decide, highlighting mismanagement in public works, and how it is used to feed frames under the guise of performing tremendously overvalued works, and even unnecessary.

This contrasts with the reduction of budget for many basic services, and the abandonment of cultural and environmental heritage, these being fundamental to the quality of life of citizens, preservation of our history and identity, and maintenance of tourism as one of the engines of the economy.
