The Plenary Hall opens for 23 Saharawi children in the camps of Tindouf and their families Murcia host (14/07/2016)

The Mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, and the councilman of Youth and Development Cooperation, Rebeca Perez, received in the Plenary Hall of children from the Saharawi refugee camps in Tindouf (southern Algeria) today, who are going the murcianas summer with host families, through the Saharawi Smile Murcia association.

"In total, they will spend the summer in the region a total of 92 children, of which 23 have been taken in by families of Murcia, which is the municipality that more number hosts," said the mayor, adding that "it is of children between 10 and 12 years, many of whom are repeat visitors, who arrived on July 4 and will stay here until 4 September. "

The primary objective of this program host is to strengthen the health of these children in refugee camps, receive a basic food, so they may have nutritional deficits, as well as spare hard summers more than 50 degrees who they live in the Sahara, without means and in the desert.

"At the same time, children acquire new knowledge and learn Castilian.

The program also helps improve awareness of the situation of these children, not only foster families and their environment, but also the whole of the Murcian society, "said José Ballesta.

Experience indicates that both families and children, after an initial adjustment period, valued the experience very positively and about 60% of small repeated and also acquire a good level of Spanish.

Grant airline tickets

Murcia City Council yesterday approved during the session of the Municipal Council for Cooperation and Solidarity, the call for grants amounting to 350,000 euros for projects of development cooperation in the country (300,000 euros) and awareness (50,000) .

Within this call for aid, the Consistory has funded projects in previous years for the extraction of water in the Sahara and provided support for flights of children as well as for the stay of Saharawi monitors.
