A researcher at the UCAM identifies new compounds in the beneficial wine health (06/07/2016)

Javier Marhuenda Hernandez, a member of the research group Nutrition and Oxidative Stress of the Catholic University, has defended the doctoral thesis entitled `Bioactive compounds in red wine and its effect on oxidative stress and vascular markers of inflammation, mutagenesis and degeneration of the nervous system Central after sanos' dietary intake by volunteers, led by Dr. Angel Gil Izquierdo, Pilar Zafrilla Rentero and Juana Canovas Mulero.

This project, which jointly involved researchers from the UCAM and the Center for Soil Science and Applied del Segura (CEBAS-CSIC) in collaboration with Bodegas Baigorri SAU (DO Rioja Alavesa, venture capital 100% murciano) Biology, obtained results in which is shown first in the wine, the presence of some potentially beneficial compounds called phytoprostanes health.

The main objective of the research was to determine the effects of intake of red wine on cardiovascular health and the oxidation state of the body, next to the central nervous system, in order to identify what compounds are responsible for the effects benefits of red wine.

The origin of this research stems from the tradition of consuming this alcoholic beverage intake attributed to its moderate beneficial effects from the presence of polyphenols.

However, due to the low absorption of these compounds, the need to analyze the influence of other bioactive compounds present in wine and its beneficial effects on health.

In fact, the researcher assures that "there are components in said beverage able to exercise the same activity, and even more effectively than the polyphenols, such as melatonin or hydroxytyrosol and also the phytoprostanes we describe for the first time in red wine" .

Therefore, "not only wine polyphenols lives" so says Dr. Javier Marhuenda and after the defense.
