Donation portrait of one of the architects of the creation of the UMU (17/06/2016)

The University of Murcia (UMU) today celebrated the act of receiving political portrait murciano Isidoro de la Cierva and Peñafiel, who was one of the main drivers of the creation in 1915 of this educational institution.

The portrait by the painter José María Almela Costa, has been donated by the family of politician, in a ceremony presided over the Rector of the University of Murcia, José Orihuela, in the building of convalescence.

In it, it has glossed the continued commitment of Cierva with the needs of the region in education, public works and transport.

In relation to the University of Murcia, Secretary General, Santiago Alvarez, he highlighted the efforts made so that the legal provision (amendment to the Budget Law) is to approve the 17 December 1914 by which it would have created the UMU.

The secretary general of the educational institution has extended recognition of this achievement parliamentarians Juan de la Cierva Peñafiel, Angel Guirao, Joaquín Paya and Salvador Martinez Moya and intellectuals Andrés Baquero, Joaquín Cerdá Vicente Llovera, Emilio Diez de Revenga, Luis Leante and Mariano Ruiz-Funes.

Grandchildren honoree have said they did not know their grandfather, who died in 1939, but his memory has always been present in their lives thanks to the stories of her mother, "I would have been very happy and proud that the picture was here ", they explained.

For its part, the rector Orihuela said that this portrait, to be installed in a space provided for this purpose, is the first of a series of initiatives to be undertaken to remind important personalities in the history of the University of Murcia.
