The Ballet Don Quixote of Marius Petipa was, along with Swan Lake, one of the most popular ballets in Russia, where it was created in 1869 on a score by Ludwig Minkus.

The libretto is based on an episode of the second volume of Cervantes' Don Quixote and the action is more focused on the tumultuous love affairs of Quiteria and Basilio in their own adventures of Don Quixote and Sancho.

According to Martinez himself "based on the original choreography by Marius Petipa, and the various versions that have had occasion to dance Nureyev, Baryshnikov or Gorski, it seemed important to keep the choreographic construction of the ballet, but I wanted to give a touch more poetic character of Don Quixote and his quest for the perfect love embodied by Dulcinea ".
