The Governing Council, on a proposal from the Ministry of Culture and Spokesperson, has approved the protocol between the Community and the city of Murcia to undertake a comprehensive project for the recovery of cultural heritage with the enhancement of the archaeological site of San Esteban and his environment.
The aim is to restore its use and enjoyment by citizens.
The protocol will allow undertake a coordinated manner between Community and City Council a comprehensive recovery project with strict respect for the directives of protection of cultural heritage.
To do this, the tasks, including the study and archaeological methodology, enabling the city and the region have a space major reference in the cultural and tourism sector will begin.
The works are aimed at the integration of the site itself in the urban environment and include intervention in the Palacio de San Esteban, regional government headquarters and in the adjacent deconsecrated Church of San Esteban.
In addition, a joint body to monitor the work for implementation and determine possible extensions will be created.
Also, there will be the Directorate General of Fine Arts and Cultural Assets and Archives and Libraries of the Ministry of Culture of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport;
Hispania Nostra Association and the Santa María La Real Foundation of Historical Heritage, prestigious institutions in the cultural field, as observers of the process.
The site of St. Stephen is declared of Cultural Interest (BIC) with the category of archaeological zone.
The archaeological remains of the suburb of Arrixaca New make an important contribution to the knowledge of the urban fabric of the old suburb of the Arrixaca, with a typological value as a sign of a traditional Islamic house of Murcia suburb of the twelfth-thirteenth centuries.
