Students decide that part of the budget of the UMU is intended for study grants and mobility (02/05/2016)

The University of Murcia (UMU) has released the results of the pilot students Participatory Budgeting procedure, by which these have decided the fate of 40,000 euros for the year 2016.

Students, by direct universal suffrage could choose from a catalog of 18 projects, being the most voted the aid to the study, scholarship programs of international mobility and support large disabilities.

Students have also selected for funding projects scholarships dining rural scholarships, cultural activities, training activities, awareness and scholarships for refugees performances in sport and training in transversal skills.

The rector of the University of Murcia, José Orihuela, during the press conference presenting the results held today at the rectory, announced that the three most voted programs will receive additional funding of 10,000 euros, to be distributed in its share.

The Vice Chancellor of Students, Quality and Equality, Miguel Angel Perez, in the assessment of the survey, stressed that they show a student of the UMU socially engaged, while the president of the Student Council of the University (Ceumar) Domingo Antonio Sanchez has indicated that the results show awareness of students to the economic problems of peers as well as their solidarity.

With this procedure participatory budgeting, the UMU responds to demands for greater participation and transparency in decision-making and implements a principle and example of good governance.

In this regard, the Vice Chancellor of Economy, Sustainability and Health Sciences, José María Abellán, explained that in 2017 involving the other two groups at the University, faculty and administrative staff and services will open, which, along with students, they will decide what is spent 150,000 euros.

The Vice Chancellor has expressed confidence that, in the not too distant future, can widen participation and recipients of the UMU determine the fate of higher percentages of spending.

The presentation has intervened chairman of Transparency, Jose Molina, who has congratulated the University of Murcia have been driving this initiative of "effective participation, which makes it strengthens democracy and civil society".

Among the Spanish universities, only the University of Murcia and the Complutense have implemented this model of participatory budgets.
