Professor Pablo Artal UMU donates 20,000 euros for scholarships to outstanding high school students (20/04/2016)

The University of Murcia (UMU) has called ten scholarships, 2,000 euros each, to facilitate the incorporation and development of university science in this institution during the course 2016/2017.

The provision of scholarships comes from donations made by the professor of Optics at the UMU Pablo Artal, King Jaime I Prize 2015 in the category of New Technologies for his research on the application of these to the human eye.

The assistance may attend students with excellent results (must demonstrate high academic level) who attend High School, Vocational Training Higher Level or equivalent qualifications and who have chosen to study Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Optics and Optometry, Mathematics or Computer Engineer in UMU.

The grants are intended to cover costs of studies of official degree can be chosen such as the purchase of books, manuals, practical and laboratory equipment, software and educational-hardware, as well as attendance at conferences and meetings scientific or additional training for the title.

Pablo Artal, who delivered the plenary lecture of the VII Regional Congress of Researchers Junior CMN-CARM, said that "the future of our university passes retain students most talented, and this is my modest contribution to help more bright ".

In his talk, Professor Artal has spoken of his experience as a researcher to about five hundred high school students who met today at the Faculty of Economics and Business at the University of Murcia.

The rector of this, José Orihuela, who opened the conference, said that the Artal is "a great initiative that complements the existing scholarship, is an example to follow and we will try to promote similar actions in other areas and disciplines ".

The congress is organized by junior researchers at the University of Murcia, through its Campus of International Excellence Mare Nostrum (CMN) and the Autonomous Region to promote scientific vocation of students from high school in the region.

At the opening it has also involved the rector of the UPCT, Alejandro Diaz in what was his first official act as head of it, besides the CEO of Quality Education and Vocational Training, Fernando Mateo, and the vice presidents of the UMU Bernardo Cascales (Coordination and Internationalisation) and Juan Antonio García (Research).
