Murcia, between European capitals finalists for the awards Mobility Week that fail tomorrow in Brussels (19/04/2016)

José Ballesta defends the candidacy of the municipality as a European benchmark in sustainable mobility, after being selected from a total 1,873 cities in 19 different countries.

The city of Murcia is among the European capitals finalists receive prizes of European Mobility Week, some awards promoted by the Directorate General of Environment of the European Union and which fail tomorrow in Brussels.

The Mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, attend to defend the candidacy of the municipality as a leader in sustainable mobility, having been selected from a total 1,873 cities in 19 different countries.

"European cities are facing new challenges in which the local and global are understood as an interconnected whole.

Therefore, from the local level we must make a commitment to invest in clean transport which allow to transform not only the daily life of our environment, but to achieve benefits also extend to the global level, laying the foundation for policies of tomorrow the transport, "said the mayor.

The awards ceremony will take place tomorrow, from 18.30, at the Vaudeville Theatre in Brussels.

The ceremony will be attended by the Commissioner responsible for transport, Violeta Bulc and Commissioner responsible for Environment, Karmenu Vella, as well as with local authorities of other candidate cities.

With this award, the European Union wants to recognize the activities carried out by local authorities within the framework of the European Mobility Week and promote the exchange of experience and success in your organization.

Winners will be chosen by a jury of independent experts in urban mobility.

Murcia held the European Mobility Week 2015 with more than fifty free and varied under the slogan "Choose, Change, combines activities.

First meeting with Eurocities

In the morning, José Ballesta hold a working meeting with the Secretary General of Eurocities, Anna Lisa Boni, which will present the draft Network Carriles Bike Murcia, participatory and open to the contributions of different groups proposal and social agents of the city, which will articulate an urban network of 200 kilometers of bike paths interconnected in North-South and East-West axis of the city.

This is the first meeting with the mayor remains responsible for Eurocities, a network of European cities that brings together more than 170 cities in 35 countries that govern 130 million people.

The aim of Eurocities is to strengthen the role of local governments in the structure of multilevel governance of the European Union, working with various institutions to address common problems that affect the daily lives of Europeans, through seven large areas: environment, mobility, social affairs, cooperation, economy, culture and knowledge society.
