"The university should be a planet for free thought and teaching revolutionary act" (10/03/2016)

José Carrión, Professor of Plant Development at the University of Murcia, presents his work 'Planeta University'.

Tomorrow will be Friday, March 11, at 19.00 pm in the building of Convalescence, home of the Chancellor.

This book, edited by Editum, Publications Service of the University of Murcia, is a compilation of newspaper articles that Professor Carrion publishes periodically for more than twenty years ago, with book reviews and some of the speeches he has made in the last times.

The event will be chaired by the rector, José Orihuela, who will accompany, besides the author, teachers of the UMU Antonio González Valverde and Mercedes Farias Batlle, as well as the journalist of the newspaper La Verdad Francisco José Larrosa.

Science and scientists, college and university policy, all peppered with literary references, are the main topics included in "Planet University".

Among the highlights they are collected speeches which delivered the opening day of the University Course, before the King Felipe VI and the rectors of the Spanish universities, coinciding with the centennial celebration of the University of Murcia.

The titles of the items collected are sufficiently illustrative of the author's intention, trying to "stir minds and consciences" with his writings: Is there a future for science in college ?;

Brain drain and retention of inept;

The talent in exile;

Professor where is your glory ?;

That the crisis comes to college;

Bologna.

Victoria bureaucracy;

Scientists: if you want them, pay them, or Tribulations of Orihuela, the usurper.

Carrion invites them to do scientific research, reflects on governance and university policy, and advocates a place where "creative training, autonomous, reflective and modern for students" are encouraged.

The author gives us the key to understanding compilation is presented and the title that includes: "I think that the University should be a planet for free thought and teaching of revolutionary act".

It also regrets the introduction of the "university company has specialized in silence us what we want to say, to educate ourselves to camouflage our intellectual capacities" and proposes this publication as a couch that produces reflection.

The work was prefaced by Ana Crespo de las Casas, Professor of Botany at the Complutense University of Madrid, scholar of the Royal Academy of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences and former Director General of Universities in the 90 Crespo he says in the prologue that the publication is not just a scientific test, since "the author shows himself getting into the pond, baring their feelings through a reference that is the feeling of love that causes the university."

Professor Carrion, the Spanish botanist most cited and regular contributor to the Murcia press, launches a challenge: "Read the book if they want to enter more in this Orwellian vision of the university reality."
