[The Murcia City Council reduces the irrigation of its grass meadows (14/02/2021)

"We work so that our green areas are friendly and attractive spaces for all residents, spaces where they can walk, relax and do outdoor activities.

The lawn helps to do all of this by covering and greening a multitude of gardens in the municipality, which improves quality of the air we breathe and biodiversity increases ", highlighted José Guillén The Murcia City Council, through the Department of Modernization of the Administration and Urban Development, led by José Guillén, reduces the irrigation of its grass meadows and carries out the mowing of thousands of square meters of grass. Due to the increase in temperatures, one of the essential tasks in green areas is increasing the frequency of lawn mowing. Of the more than 3,000 thousand existing green areas, there are currently more than 500 medians, roundabouts, green areas and lawned gardens in the municipality, five of them considered 'historic'. These works seek to reduce the height of the lawn, mainly kikuyu (Pennisetum clandestium) both in the more than 150 neighborhood gardens, and in the nearly 400 that currently exist in the districts of Murcia. "We work so that our green areas are friendly and attractive spaces for all the neighbors, spaces where they can walk, relax and do outdoor activities.

The lawn helps to all this by upholstering and greening many gardens in the municipality, which improves quality the air we breathe, the environment and biodiversity increases ", José Guillén highlighted In addition, other tasks are carried out during the mowing, such as the fertilizer (so that it grows well after the vegetative stop) and the fumigation in spring. "We have a multitude of grass meadows and it is just now when they come out of their lethargy or hibernation, which originates a greater activity of care by the different professionals of the parks and gardens of the entire municipality of Murcia, who arrive this season to be each one of those meadows five and six times ", explains José Guillén. Some works carried out by more than a dozen teams (with about thirty people) of the concession company STV- It acts for each and every one of the different green areas of the municipality. The works are carried out with state-of-the-art machinery, including mowing and recycling machines called 0-turn, brushcutters and lawn mowers that allow the meadows to have a green and suitable appearance. The predominant variety of grass in the different green spaces of the municipality of Murcia is the Pennisetum clandestinum (kikuyu), which now benefits from the fertilizer tasks that have been carried out for months by the concessionary company STV-Actúa and the City Council of Murcia. More than 50 gardens are controlled and monitored remotely thanks to the Murcia Smart City project  The Murcia City Council has also incorporated in twenty new green spaces a modern system that allows these areas to be controlled remotely with a computer or mobile device, adding up to a total of 50 gardens in the municipality.   In these new spaces it is possible to remotely activate, deactivate or control the water or humidity of the different green areas.

The mechanism controls irrigation with state-of-the-art systems such as Wi-Fi and GPRS, allowing the detection of any leak or failure and the paralysis of the irrigation system if it rains.   Among the places where these control systems are installed via Wi-Fi are the Malecón Garden, Chinese Garden, Floridablanca Garden, Fofó Garden, Circular Square, Costera Sur, El Palmar or Santo Ángel, among others.   The new system expands the existing one in numerous green areas of the municipality and is reviewed and controlled by specialists to verify its correct operation.   Among the new spaces where these new remote access points are being installed are Los Chorletes in El Palmar, Villa Carmen in El Ranero, Aljada in Puente Tocinos, Avenida Juan de Borbón in Santiago and Zaraiche, C / Periodista Antonio Herrero in Santiago and Zaraiche , El Secano in Torreagüera and Paseo Santa Águeda in Vistalegre.   The parks and gardens of the municipality use an efficient irrigation system that saves 30%   It is important that trees and plants grow healthy to ensure the improvement of the environment, air quality and the safety of citizens by reducing the risk of falling branches.   In this way, the green areas are also beautified and natural shades are offered to all the residents of the municipality, with the central objective of improving their quality of life.   Likewise, the frequency of irrigation has been modified, taking place at this summer time at night, to improve evapotranspiration that makes the plant increase its vitality and better absorb the water it needs, saving costs and resources.   For this, the automated systems have been updated so that they irrigate more frequently and the adequate amount of water that corresponds to each area is measured, being different at each time of the year.
