[Murcia will once again lead the Eurocities digital citizenship working group (24/01/2021)

| This group of cities focuses its actions on the importance of connecting citizens with municipal management through digital tools and social networks | Murcia will once again lead, together with Genoa, the digital citizenship working group of the Eurocities Knowledge Society Forum. This has been chosen by the representatives of the 22 cities belonging to this forum of the main European cities network: Debrecen, Ghent, Rotterdam, Milan, Utrecht, Porto, Kungsback, Rennes Metropole, Paris, Belfast, Antwerp, Pau Béarn Pyrénées, Timisoara , Manchester, Warsaw, Bologna, Glasgow, Palermo, Valladolid, Oulu, Murcia and Genoa. This set of cities focuses its action on the importance of connecting citizens with municipal management through digital tools and social networks.

In this way, cities exchange experiences on the subject and analyze success stories carried out. "The local administration must be close to our neighbors and address how cities can provide solutions through new technologies and digital tools," said Mercedes Bernabé, councilor for Urban Agenda and Open Government. Specifically, the working group focuses its action on digital inclusion and adaptive communication, which aims to update the way in which municipalities interact with citizens and make decisions through governance and digital participation. Extensive experience in digital participatory processes The City Council, through the Department of Urban Agenda and Open Government, has extensive experience in terms of citizen participation through digital tools. In this sense, Mercedes Bernabé recalls the public consultations carried out during the pandemic, such as those related to Circular Economy strategies and Corporate Social Responsibility, the latter aimed at the Social Council of the City, or the dissemination campaign to raise awareness and implementation of the collection of organic waste for its revaluation through the European project Valuewaste. “Right now we are focused on new digital participatory processes, such as the one we developed with Conexion Sur.

In this sense, new technologies play a relevant role in giving a voice to the residents of the districts and neighborhoods of the South, in an area in which we already have previous experience ”, added the mayor. The main network of European cities Eurocities is the main network of European cities with more than 250,000 inhabitants.

It unites more than 140 of the largest cities in Europe, which between them govern 130 million citizens in 39 countries. Within this network is the Knowledge Society Forum, a space for debate in which European cities address the need for citizens to have access to new technologies.

The Forum is structured in two areas, a general one where Eurocities reports on the plans and strategies of the European Commission and a specific one in which the working groups address the issues that concern cities, such as Urban Digital Forecasting, Data , Standards and Interoperability and Digital Citizenship.
