[Work begins on the El Esparragal bike lane, creating a continuous route of more than 11 kilometers of bicycle network (18/01/2021)

| In this way, the existing segregated bike lane on the North Coast will be expanded until reaching Montepinar | Work begins on the construction of the bike path that will allow the residents of El Esparragal to travel with their bicycle in complete safety on a journey of 11.2 kilometers until they reach La Ã'ora. The new infrastructure, which will connect the Montepinar urbanization with the existing bike lane on the Costera Norte, has a segregated typology, both from road traffic and pedestrian traffic.

Once executed and connected to the rest of the cycle lanes of the Costera Norte, it will form part of the arterial network of bike lanes in the city. Thus, the new road will run adjacent to the RMA4 highway, which is owned by the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia.

For this reason, the works have been authorized by said body prior to their execution, in such a way that the successful bidder has expressly requested authorization from said body before the work begins. Specifically, given the high intensity of traffic currently supported by the Costera Norte road, it is considered essential to maintain the current lanes and their dimensions, but also to maintain as far as possible an outside arc that allows adequate functionality and the necessary security. For this reason, a new 1-meter shoulder is created that separates the traffic from the curb to be executed, which results in improving the safety of cyclists while maintaining the comfort and safety of the traffic as much as possible filmed. The route will run parallel to the road, from its initial kilometer point to kilometer 285, from which it progressively separates from the road, crossing the wooded area. In this way, the final point of the proposed route is reached, 342, where it joins the existing sidewalk on the main access road to the urbanization. From this point on, the cyclist can travel to any point of the urbanization by running through the inner roads of the same. Regarding the typology of the bike lane, it will be similar to that of the cycle lane that runs parallel to the North Coast.

For this reason, the bike lane will be run separately from the existing road, not only through the one-meter shoulder, but also raised above it, similar to pedestrian sidewalks. To do this, a precast concrete curb and a row of PVC bollards will be used that, visually, delimit a line that separates both roads (the road traffic and the cyclists), providing greater safety to all of them.

In this way, while the planned row of bollards performs the functions of a visual barrier (but not a physical one), the concrete curb performs the opposite function (a physical barrier, not so much visual). In addition, the luminaires will be repositioned and new specific vertical signs will be installed for the bike lane. The works will be executed by Ayllonza, SL, for an amount of 73,362.87 euros, in a period of 4 months. The Councilor for Sustainable Mobility and Youth, Rebeca PÃ © rez, explained that "the commitment to the implementation of bike lanes in the last 4 years in Murcia is a national benchmark.

We currently have more than 117 kilometers of lanes bike in the municipality, with 3,156 bike parking spaces, and 20 new kilometers are in the process for their tender " function { ;(, , {});}
