[The secrets of the Berber zarcero are revealed in an exhibition that houses the Interpretation Center of La Contraparada (15/01/2021)

| The exhibition will offer the visitor a journey through the life of this bird, which lives in Murcia after completing a migratory trip from Africa | The Interpretation Center of La Contraparada, which is located in the district of Javalà Nuevo, will host an exhibition that will reveal to visitors all the secrets of the Berber zarcero, a bird of African origin that lives in Murcia after s from completing a long migratory journey. This project is the result of the joint work that ANSE and Aguas de Murcia have developed within the framework of the agreement that both entities signed to meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Between 9:30 a.m.

and 2:00 p.m. The exhibition can be visited every Saturday and Sunday in the morning between 9:30 am and 2:00 pm.

The Councilor for Sustainable Development, Antonio Navarro; the managing director of Aguas de Murcia, Rafael Gómez; and the director of ANSE, Pedro GarcÃa, presented the exhibition this morning. The mayor Navarro has pointed out that "this exhibition is an example of the environmental project that we follow in the Government Team and that presents as its main objective the defense and improvement of the environment and nature by respecting its fauna and flora and the application of policies that favor sustainability ". Defense of natural values For his part, Rafael Gómez has pointed out that "for Aguas de Murcia it is a pride to contribute hand in hand with ANSE to the development of initiatives such as this one, which defends natural values ??and promotes sustainability in our municipality while bringing nature and its protagonists to citizens ". Under the name â € ˜Zarcero Berber, a nomad from Segura por el Sahara ', this exhibition is made up of four panels that reveal different episodes of the cycle of this bird.

In addition, a short audiovisual has been prepared that summarizes the main results of the work carried out with the species. The exhibition is completed by a museum-quality replica of a life-size Berber watcher and a sample of monitoring elements (radio transmitter and geolocator) used in the investigations. Radio monitoring campaign The exhibition also includes the results of the radio monitoring campaign in 2018 of five specimens of Berber zarcero from La Contraparada.

This initiative highlighted the importance of the riparian forest, particularly if it contains tamarins, for the conservation of this species against the reed beds, which were not selected by these animals. In addition, the radio-monitoring made it possible to detect that the Berber bramble trees are capable of using recently restored areas with riparian forest, so the success of gallery formation plantations can be used as a bioindicator. The Berber zarcero is a small insectivorous passerine that barely weighs 12 grams and whose breeding area is restricted to northwestern Africa (Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia) and the Iberian Peninsula (Spain ay South of Portugal).

This species has recently been separated from its close relative from the eastern Mediterranean, the pallid zarcero.
