[The surroundings of the Las Boqueras special education school and the center of Asteamur already have traffic lights adapted to people with autistic disorder (14/01/2021)

| The City Council develops the pilot project for the implantation of pictograms in 12 traffic lights | The Department of Sustainable Mobility and Youth, through the Traffic Service and in collaboration with the Autism Federation of the Region of Murcia (Faum) and the Asteamur and Astrade entities, has begun to develop the pilot implementation project of signs adapted to people with autism spectrum disorder at various crosswalks. In this first phase, pictograms have been placed on the poles of the traffic lights of the two routes that concentrate the most needs, such as the streets near the Asteamur Service Center, located on Calle Greco, and the Centro Las Boqueras Special Education Center located on Camino Viejo de Monteagudo, Santiago and Zaraiche. In total, 75 posters, measuring 30x60 centimeters, have been installed in the columns of 12 traffic light crosses.

In them there are three pictograms indicating in an iconic way when it is possible to cross the pedestrian crossing safely. This is intended to promote communication and understanding by synthesizing the message of when it is possible to cross the road or not, depending on the type of light that is illuminated at all times at the traffic lights of the pedestrian crossings. These images have been determined by the mobility technicians of the Murcia City Council in close collaboration with FAUM, a work that has been certified by ARASAAC, the Aragonese Center for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (ARASAAC), which has validated the effectiveness of the initiative. Once the real effectiveness of this action has been tested, different itineraries will be jointly determined for its progressive implementation both in the urban area and in districts. The Councilor for Sustainable Mobility and Youth, Rebeca PĂ © rez, explained that "with this action we advance in the implementation of measures that allow regulations or traffic signs to be more inclusive and easier.

Easily understandable also for people with ASD ". According to experts, pictograms are the fundamental basis in the learning process of any person with this disorder.

For years, methods based on anticipation systems have been used through the use of visual cues since, verbally warning of the events that are going to occur is not effective for most people with ASD while representations of the reality through pictograms or photographs they are to a much greater extent. The Las Boqueras School of Special Education has a total of 43 students, with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and others with Serious Behavior Problems (TGC), associated with Mental Health difficulties or disability. For its part, the Asteamur center in Murcia, located in a facility provided by the Murcia City Council, welcomes fifty children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD).

The 160-square-meter facility has five therapeutic intervention cabinets and a psychomotor and multisensory stimulation classroom in which children receive therapy and early care.
